Hello all, my name is Levi. I am 30 and married with children. For the longest time I only owned toyotas, then moved to bmw's and just recently got rid of my sr20 swapped 240sx hatch.

Stumbled across a deal that helped a friend out and got me a clean car that only needs a little work. So I bought my first Malibu, it's an 03 with all the options.

I stumbled across this website when I was searching to see if I could find anyone that had put a 5speed in a malibu or similar chassis. If I could make that happen I could be happy with this car for a long time. My dad had a 98 malibu that I used to drive everywhere when I was younger and I loved it.

I will be searching this forum high and low for any info pertaining to this and any links or info anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

It would also be cool to meet some new people if any are in the oklahoma city vicinity.

              First off welcome!

Second off this is a forum dedicated to the 60* v6 not the 90*v6. Kind of like a GM vs ford thing in regards to those 2.

Isn't not worth the time/money involved with it. You are better off turboing or supercharging the 3.1 or upgrading to a 3.4/3.5 first. Stock block 3400 and 3500 can take 300+ HP reliably.

As for a manual swap, 2.2 and 2.4 Grand am and Alero's (same chassis's, N bodies) came with a manual. People have swapped those in before. As well as the 6 speed F40 from saab's and G6 GTP's.

I will post up some threads with more information later. Most of the manual swap info will be on grandamGT.com or Aleromod.com maybe even some good stuff on gaownersclub.com

Awesome! Thank you. I am sure I will be happy with 3.1 for a while. My main concern is bolting a manual trans to it. If I am reading correctly I should be able to do some bell housing/case half swapping and it's a bolt up affair. Correct me if I am wrong. I will be doing more research when I get home.

The 2.2 trans has the same bell housing, so no need to swap case halves.

The 2000-2002 Cavalier/Sunfire 2200 pushrod motor... don't confuse this with the later 2.2L Ecotec.

I just swapped the F23 5 speed into my Fiero with the 2.8, but I don't have it on the road yet.

And yeah, the Malibu is essentially an N-body with some minor changes, so the Grand Am and Alero communities would have plenty of applicable info. I also have a Grand Am GT and am a member over at Grand Am Owners Club.

Unfortunately, the N-body scene is hitting the 10 year old car lull it seems and there's not as much activity as there was 5 years ago.

Wow I am glad I found this place. Like I said I have been reading and will continue to research this. I read somewhere that the f23 was not designed for more than 170 ish tq. Is this an issue?

The 23 in F23 denotes a 230N/m (169.64 ft/lb) torque rating, but there are Fiero owners that have had the F23 behind turbocharged 3800s with more than 450HP to the wheels for a couple of years now. It may have not been intentional, but the F23 appears to be quite a bit stronger than its rating. Like anything, if you abuse it enough it will break, but it's a stout transmission.

Well, I never said Ecotec, but I'm glad you clarified it 100%.

The F40 is the popular swap for fiero's currently for guy's with the higher hp (400+) 3800's.
Same bellhousing as a 3100 (get used to saying 3100,the 3.1 and 3100 are different generations and quite a bit different) but i don't know anything about swapping into a non fiero application (and little about the fiero application lol).
But if you're going high hp than might be an option.
These guys know these pretty well,so they'll hopefully correct if i'm wrong.
Pretty sure Carbon will know alot more about, figured i would mention it since it seems to be popular on the groups and fiero.nl.
Might be overkill or too much work in the malibu though.

Going to pick up another running 3100 in the morning. Low-ish miles with EVERYTHING attached except the car.

It will get dropped in within the next few days. And the one that comes out will be getting completely rebuilt and ready to go back in when needed. And I will also be gathering my f23 swap parts
