  • Redbird's Sunbird: Up in Flames

On October 27th last year, my poor sunbird bit the dust once and for all. after all the abuse i've put it through at the track, broken parts, shelled out engines, fire finally took it. the whole car didn;t go up, just the engine bay, but the car is a total loss.

basically, I went home for lunch, and about 20 min after I got home I went out to find smoke billowing from under the hood. Grabbed the extinguisher from inside and dumpped it into the front and back of the hood and the wheel wells. probably saved the rest of the car from going up, and also saved the rims. fire dept showed up just after i emptied the extinguisher and finished it.

most likely electrical. there's no real way to know what exactly happened, just that DS rear area of the bay got it the worst, so i'm guessing it started there.

    here's pics:

the leftovers are up for sale here and on a couple other sites. feel free to puruse those ads, i'd like the engine to go to a good and useful home, as it's ok, just needs a donor V6 car and some new gaskets.

That sucks, trust me I know the feeling. I picked up a 69 Dart when I was stationed at Ft. Campbell back in 89. I brought it home, tore it down repainted, swapped a 383/727/ 8 3/4" rear with 3.55 posi. I got about 30 miles on it and the slip yoke broke just driving down the road at about 40 mph. It broke the tail housing and the driveshaft cut a hole in the floor, caught on fire(yes I was shitting my pants). My brother was driving it so I didn't even get a chance to get behind the wheel before it went up. Well, it was insured for a whole 2 weeks. I got the check for 5,000 and found a 67 GT convertible to transplant the remainder of the drivetrain and another tranny into. It was weird, around town the slant 6 in the 67 was great. When we picked it up in Louisville and was driving it back to Minnesota on the freeway that thing was just blowing oil so bad. Stop to fill the oil and check the gas, haha. We got back here and around town, not a drop. Believe me it smoked so bad my sister couldn't stay behind us.
