  • Here to learn more about 3100/3500 swaps

As far as I go, I've had 65 cars in the last 17 years, a good many of the GM products but only one with a 2.8 engine and none with a 3.1 engine. I have had a couple of 3.3L A-bodies, though. Most of the cars I've owned have been V8 and rear drive, like the '76 Gran Torino I have now (and will keep for life).

I'm a member of many other forums, many of you will recognize me, I'm on W-body, J-body, A-body forums, I'm on [M], I'm on BITOG, FTE, GTS.org, the list goes on and on.

I'm waiting to hear back from a guy now on a 2000 model Malibu about 15 minutes from me. He's asking $300 and says the engine is "blown". I'm assuming LIM/head gasket failure and maybe it's fixable but I might just decide to grab a 3500 I found on car-part for $350 and drop that in. Especially if I get the car cheaper than $300. Would make a good winter beater and then I can sell it in the spring to finance more projects, like putting a third row seat in my wife's Durango, or swapping an AOD into my Torino, or just buying another car altogether.

We'll see what comes of it, but there's so many 3100-equipped cars for sale around DFW that it's a pretty good bet the next project I buy will be one of them. And the late model 3400 or 3500 swap looks like a simple fix for an annoying problem with the bonus of having more power and better driveability.

I wouldn't bother if your goal is to sell the car.

      Well isn't that lovely.

Anyway, there is not so much a goal to sell the car as there is a wife-imposed limit of one project at a time in addition to my ongoing neverending Torino project/daily driver/money pit.

With my last project stripped and scrapped (1990 Ciera) I have the ability to get another car to play with. My goal would be to make it a functional car again. If I can't do that then it gets stripped and scrapped. I'll make money either way.

3400 swap would be the most direct and cheapest of the swaps. The 3500 is going to require a couple specialty products, which is going to increase the cost of the swap. 3100 would of course be the simplest, but the 3400 would at least get you a little more power under the hood.

I was under the impression that the 3400 engine has LIM problems (Venture minivans, Impalas, etc). Is there a particular year range that doesn't have these issues?

There are metal replacement gaskets (Felpro and Dorman) for the 3100/3400 engines that should fix any LIM gasket issues. GM provided an improved gasket design several years back, but it really comes down to proper installation of the gaskets, mainly torquing of the bolts and using thread locker on them.
