hey guys. I've been lurking this website for quite a while, and i didn't even notice that i never introduced myself. My name is Gerson and I hail from Torrance, CA, which is like 15 minutes south of L.A. I've got an 87' Chevy Beretta GT with the 2.8v6 and 253K miles. I've been part of the Beretta community for years, and I mostly dwell around Bstuff. I love this old car and once I've got another car to take care of DD duties, I wanna pop in a 3.5 with a 5-speed into this thing. Maybe California will allow me to do so. Let's see how that works out.

IIRC when upgrading the engine in California, you need to pull over the entire Emission system from that year car too... Which includes ECM harness and all that jazz. I cringe thinking about putting that in a Beretta.

Welcome!
From what I understand, you can swap a newer engine and transmission in, but also have to retain the engine control that mates to said engine. In other words, if you use a 3500, you need to put in the entire wiring harness, trans and have to pass emissions to the specs of the new engine, not to your car.
When do cars become exempt in your area?

Thanks for the welcome guys. Yeah, the whole time I was wondering how I'm gonna pull this off. There's another member with a Beretta from Cali. on Bstuff and ask him how he did his 3400 swap. As far as when they become exempt, I think it's after 25 years, so mine's got a couple more to go.
Oh, Here's a couple of pics just for you, Alan

In my perfect world, I would put another 2.8 in there, except it would be Cadillac's 2.8L DOHC. That would kickass.

I know all about looking great on camera. My car came from Texas, so the spoiler and roof paint isn't in the nicest shape. I have a guy that will paint it for the cost of paint since I traded him a Toyota parts car for it, but I need money for paint and would rather wait till after I'm done doing my big engine work (like installing a 20k mile engine, ect.) so I won't have to chance scratching it all up.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.
