1992 grand prix

Hello all,

I have a 1992 grand-prix that was recently given to me. Im just wondering if anyone knows what engine it has. im not sure if it has the 3.1 or 3.4. all i know is that it has aluminum heads. the only reason i ask is because i have not seen the car yet and the previous owner has no idea
any help would be awesome

if it goes like hell, its a 3.4!! lol DOHC is another good sign of the 3.4
if the engine fills the bay, its a 3.4. if it leaks a good amount of oil, its probably a 3.4. if no mechanics want to work on it, probably a 3.4.

And yes, I concur on all points of the 3.4, but don't fear it for those reasons, it's not as bad as most people think if you know how to turn a wrench.

if the heads look like they belong on a big-block, its probably a 3.4...

If you have to search for 5 minutes to see the ground, it's probably a 3.4...

yeah im not sayin the 3.4 is junk either. its just usually pretty poorly maintained and leaks oil from atleast the oil pump drive seal. then the PCV hose is usually shit too, and the gasket off of the plate it comes from underneath the lower intake manifold there. luckily i found a gasket set when i did mine. however i still had to purchase some high heat silicone hose to make up for where the pcv hose was destroyed. -this leaked ALOT of oil. like 1L for a drive to work. then the guys that swapped it in did a shit ass job of it for me. believe me, next time i do my own swap.

the motor is good. once you get a fix on the problems and dont mind a LONG time changing the alternator. (im used to it being a 20 min job)
but over all this is a pretty cool engine and i just wish it had a little bigger of a nest.

are you sure? my dads gp was dual exhaust and a 3.1... 3100? i dont know. but i do know it had dual tips and didnt have a 3.4

hence the probably. i know some of the 3.1 cars got the dual exhaust option, but not a lot...

Another problem area on the 3.4 is the brake booster hose going soft from oil and age making the brakes worse (even though w body brakes are bad enough as it is already).

All this 3.4 talk and 95% chance its not a 3.4.

ahhh ok. just so i know too. i look for all the cars in the junk yard with lq1s in em and any more tell tale signs are great.

i learned last week that not all the GPs with the body kits (factory) got the 3.4
was news to me. lol

i never understood that. ive yet to see one without a center console though.ive seen em with shitty seats, no HUD or DIC and no power options too. but still center console.
