  • 2.8 rwd dohc?

    Hello, I am new to 60 degree v6 and am curious as to anyone ever attempting or having the desire to build a DOHC Rear wheel drive engine?
    I was going to build up my 2.8 with RWD with FWD heads but I thought why not the Big nasty DOHC heads. I am sure I will have to make my own intake since I prefer to use a Carb. I guess I just want to know if these heads will have very different plumbing where they meet up to the block etc. It's just a thought I can not afford to play around too much with. I also would like to know if anyone knows which distributor to use when switching from a TBI to using a Carb?

    You need to have the DOHC specific block in order to use the DOHC heads....

      so you're trying to stick DOHC heads on a OHV block?

      EDIT: ninja'd by brad...
      1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

        That's a no go bud. TDC heads are larger than 2.8L can use. Almost nothing will line up. Distributor? I guess you'd have to find an old 2.8L distributor set up from an old 2.8L. Not sure why you'd bother with mechanical distributor but to each their own.

          older throtle body or carburated 2.8 s10s distributors work great for the carb swap. thats what I used on my 2.8 in my 87 camaro when i went from fuel injection to carburation. I've seen the block differences and unless one of the main water ports was welded over there is no way it will bolt and then the timing cover and everything else. I was thinkin the same thing thats how i found this web site lol.

            and our blocks have no oil ports our heads get oiling fron the hydrolic lifters so... kinda another reason to just go find a DHOC long block and rebuild it

              Interchange 2.8 questions

              Hey thanks to all who have responded. I have done some more research and decided that DOHC is too much pain in the *ss for my needs.
              However I think I stick some Aluminum heads and a bigger cam on the 2.8 and call it a day until I find a 3.1 or 3.4 RWD My main concern is that I do not know how to use my distributor if it was connected to the computer.
              I am building a 65 Triumph Spitfire with my old 1993 S-10 parts if this clears up anything. I am just trying to make it as simple as possible so I can eliminate any reasons for my fuel and spark to shut down on me like it did on the S-10. I would start after being push started and run probably until it went into closed loop (I think). No fuel or spark while cranking. I could not find the plug to read computer codes as it was well hidden between the engine and firewall. Sometimes it would start on it's own but never when I needed it to. I was going to dimantle the truck anyhow so I gave up on trying to fix it knowing that if a crank sensor or some other gadget is out that it will not matter after getting a carb. I guess I just need to figure out how to get spark. ***** If anyone has a 1993 s-10 with a 2.8 you had better take a look at the wires zip tied near the oil sending unit because the casing will wear off and short out against the engine causing the ECM-B fuse to blow. This may be the same for other models of this era. Thanks Frank.

                on the left hand side, scroll overtop of DOHC-& then the last option on the list, then DOHC heads on a 3x00 block. that area on the left hand side has loads of good info if you take a look around it.
