back in the old days of PROM tuning(late 90's) you would remove the original PROM, then solder in a flash one. then put the sticker from the old one on the new one. they'll never know if they don't take the cover off...

moates.net, look for a C2, that would be a flash chip with the same external dimensions and everything, the only difference is i think all GM chips were a dark brown, while the flash chips are black, but the sticker should hide most if not all of it, as long as the only thing they do is look at it without taking the cover off...

as far as NEEDING TO, probably not... but it will get the most out of the motor if you do...

i'd say $5 for a PROM is pretty damn cost-effective...

are you allowed to modify the stock parts?

It would be very easy for someone with a burner and eprom eraser to send you a stock memcal that's been re-burned with a few small changes. I've done this for people in the past but you'd have to send me a stock memcal for a 3.1 V6 since i'm out right now.

the 1.6 rocker swap is great, then toss on a set of exhaust manifolds from a newer 3400 V6, do a 2.25" downpipe to however far you need it to be.

If you want a quick way to bump up the compression you have 3 options, the easiest is to use headgaskets for a 2.8 or 3.1 camaro. they'll get you up into the 9.2:1 range.. one other is pistons from a 3100 V6, they'll net you around 9.5:1 with stock headgaskets (the thinner ones won't work in that app).. or the highest option would be a set of pistons from a 3.1 camaro, S10 or Lumina Van (as long as it had iron heads).. those flat tops will bump it up in the 11-12:1 range.

while you are at it, break out the die grinder and gasket match everything.. lol

there's only one real problem with that: reliability. those PROMs don't last many burns, whereas the flash chips are rated for 10,000 flashes. that and you would need a burner to do them as well. the Burn2 from moates isn't capable of writing the older ones. i imagine a willems could do it though...

i deal with eproms for a living, trust me.. they're reliable enough.

we're talking about 1 re-burn out of 20-50. I have 3 commercial grade burners and a large UV eraser between home and work. All of them can handle 27c256 chips.

I run a V6 in my dirt car. Was an 89 GP but since the crash (my son in Hot Laps) am building a 91 GP I had for parts. I did the 1.6 Roller tip rocker upgrade and it has worked very well. Let us know how it goes race time.

i had 3100 style log manis on my hybrid. and if he had to have a STOCK dp with it, he could use the 3100 logs, and stock manifold. if you flip it upside down and bolt it up, it fits almost perfictly, touches the sway bar, and heater core hoses, but just a thought!
