  • Brother just inherited an 84 S-10, 2.8 carbed

Hello there! My younger brother recently inherited a good condition (70k miles, paint in good condition, interior in good condition) 84 S-10 with the carbed 2.8 engine. Here are some pics...

Anyways, i never got the opprotunity to do too many power add-ons (not that there was much) to my 2000 S-10 2.2 I4 so im kinda pointing my brother in the direction to help him gain some bottom end on this similarly weak (like my 2.2 I4) engine. Found a place that sells underdrive pulleys, theres pacesetter headers, figured upgraded spark plugs and spark plug wires would help, and maybe throwin an electric fan on there. Obviously i jump at intake first, as well but im not familiar with carbed stuff. The people over at s10forum said the stock 2bbl carb has a square opening which is nonstandard, making it hard to find an open-element type setup but i found this...

    any idea if it'll work?

not lookin at anything crazy for this engine, just lookin to help it a bit. So then...hello to all! I look forward to any help/tips, anything! lol.

one last thing: im in california where emissions are more strict. Removing the stock aircleaner setup should be fine right? All those hoses and tubes going into/out of the aircleaner assembly kind of worry me as far as emissions are concerned. But then again i can always take it to smog, pass, THEN put the open-element on? The stuff still worries me though...are they for suction/vacuum to help the engine or what?

      i likz the wheelz....

in all seriousness, it does look like a nice well-maintained truck... but you could probably get away with swapping in a 3.4 from a 93-95 camaro/firebird and putting all the carb stuff from the 2.8 onto the 3.4. i don't think anyone would notice and it should bump up a little bit of power

3.4 is a good way to go, but put on an edelbrock intake manifold and matching headers system. then you can bolt on a holly 400cmf carb. You'll love driving that s10 then!

but then he probably wouldn't pass emissions...
