  • 3400 Engine Build its finally coming together

Well figured since i finally decided what im doing with the engine i should post what i got going on.

Originally i was gonna build up my old 3400 block with iron-head pistons and headgaskets with 11.5.1 CR, with ls6 springs and ported intake manifolds and put that in my beretta.

well upon investigating the body of the beretta that idea went away since the beretta was rotted to hell.

So im still building up an engine just going to use my Grand am instead which is rust free. Im starting out with my newer engine thats in the car now that has 7k on it.

Im also going to either get a fuel cell or a 04-06 GTO gas tank since they are already mounted in the trunk anyway and go that route eliminating the fuel tank underneath and mount the muffler there and have it exit on both sides before the tire.

This is not my daily driver so im not really worried about sound and it driving me nuts. i got the subaru wagon to daily drive.

    On to the parts

New OEM GM timing chain from the pre 99 3400
New Camshaft and Crankshaft sprockets to match the chain
    New gaskets obviously
    LS-6 springs and LS-1 shims
Ported Upper and lower intake manifolds
    65mm TCE throttle-body
    1/2 TCE Phenolic spacers
1357 grind cam from the 60degree store with custom length pushrods
theres more parts but those are the new ones.

    On to the Pics
    Camshaftsprocket

    Crankshaft sprocket

36lb gtp injectors with connectors spliced on to work with my 99 wiring

and this is orignally what i was gonna use but when Jon accidentally sanded the letters off his i gave him the one i had. now i cant decide if i want to shave the letters or leave it with the letters and make people wonder. already shaved the casting marks

If i have time and the money im gonna grab the new trans i found with 300 miles on it.

And if you havent seen this is my daily/ gas saver. i was getting owned it the butt driving the grand am everyday. part was the engine the other part was the dam gas pedal is too heavy.

Good choice on getting rid of the casting seems. Too many people will paint their plenum up nice and leave the nasty jagged seems.

I'll give you my suggestion for the plenum now which I think would look really good and be different from everything else so far. Sand off the writing on the plenum. Then get some metallic graphite dark silver and paint it with that. Paint the lower black to match/blend in with the valve cover. Leave the timing cover bare aluminum, or paint it the same graphite color might not be too bad actually.

I think that would be a great look that would look cool and leave people wondering what you got in the engine. Without being too much black on black, or without being black with bright colors.

If you wanted something on the plenum (I actually think bare would be cool) you could do a red pontiac logo with white "pontiac" text next to it in the center of the plenum on top of the graphite/dark silver color. Then give the whole thing a coat of high temp clear coat on top of it all. That would make the text and metallic pop and be really nice I think. That would be more of a look like it was done by an expensive custom speed shop more though. But still really nice. I want to paint one up like that now but I have no pontiac! hahah.

You need headers BTW. If I had a car that could fit them I'd do that first thing.

headers will come soon. at least with this one i dont have to screw around they just bolt in.

as you can see the plenum i have on there now is just ported out and painted. if i ever want to something to say 3400sfi i got the plastic cover. i was originally awhile back gonna use the blank from the minivan but its the pre99 setup, and i will still have the current one thats on ther ported to 65 so if i want to swap back its no biggie.

i didnt go nuts on the backside seen as how most of its covered by stuff, i just smoothed them off. the front i removed the nub. i got some nice 36grit paper that will shave the letters off right quick.

the valve cover beleive it or not is just plane ol rustoleum brush on. its actually holding up pretty good, no flaking or chipping. the pipe that runs in front of the valve cover is getting re-routed like the minivan setup.

i cant wait till i get this stuff in the car, im itchin to drive it. havent started her in a few months. then the fun begins with tuning

well slight update decided today to sand off the 3100 sfi so i now have a naked 00+ upper intake. i got to do some finishing touches on the sanding and then off to paint.

On another note the beretta is going buh bye tomorrow and im gonna borrow a cherry picker from my uncle so i can yank the engine and get this stuff in the car. i get a little more room to move around since the beretta is going to be gone. plus i get to liquidate some of the shit i dont want with the car.

i get to start the Grand am for the first time in a couple months. it will prob sound like open headers compared to the subaru.

Ok just got done tweaking the brackets for the fuel injector rail to where they bolt to the plenum so it would work with the Series III GTP injectors. they sit nice and deep in the hole like the stock ones do.

got the cam and springs on along with the timing chain with new sprockets.

wasnt feelin how easy the crank sprocket was to take off, damn thing just slid off so those got replaced.

new headbolts and head gaskets along with metal fel pro lowers and ported lower manifold.

everything will be painted black. can you tell i like to paint everything black.

the shaved and painted upper has been knocked down on the list since its not needed right away, i already have a 65mm ported upper just not shaved.

Bought a 04 GTO gas tank off ebay to mount in the trunk. my plan is to remove the tank from under the car and relocate the muffler to where the tank current resides and have it exit before the tires on both sides. tank should be here this week

the new 04-06 GTO fuel pump to go with the GTO fuel tank i got. this will be mounted in the trunk like in the GTO and the under car one will be taken out and the muffler will be relocated to where the tank used to sit under the car

Glad to see things moving along.
I'm a bit confused about the fuel tank swap.....I know your reasoning for it, but why?
You are spending money to move the fuel tank higher in the vehicle, which WILL degrade handling (higher center of gravity), and you lose valuable trunk space for what? Aesthetics? 'Cause I doubt the new exhaust setup will yield any tangible increase in power.

not worried about trunk space i have the subaru wagon to fit crap in, one of the reason i bought it.
depending on how wide it is its either going between the strut towers or in the spare tire well, havent had a spare tire in the car in years plus i have AAA plus.
this is going to be more or less a drag car/fun car, got a daily driver. i have no plans to autocross or anything like that, so it will be good.
shoudlnt take too much away from the handling.
the tank and sender unit which includes the fuel pump only cost me 114 bucks shipped.
