cam timing question... for people w/o the timing tool.

ok, i tryed 13* and 10* retard exhaust cam, but neither fit what i wanted to get out of the car, i want a fun daily driver, those timing markes left hard starting and rough idle (along with doggy low end). anyways, i dont have a timing tool, all i have is a cam hold down, and marks on the engine block to get me to 13 and 10. so decided that i might want to try something closer to 6/6 but without the timing tool i cant get exactly 6adv int, and 6ret exh. but i can guestimate and probaby get like 2/3 or 3/5 or 4/2 etc. i was wondering if anything that is adv intake and ret exhaust will give benifits of the 6/6 but just less of it, or will a wierd combo give me worse performance than stock?

i figure the more ret on the exhaust will give more high end HP, and more adv on intake (up to 6*) will give me more TQ. correct me if im wrong.
