Cool, what did that turbo do for you HP the 1/4 etc. How did your engine take it? How hard was the tranny swap what should I look out for? Was it worth it? You are my hero!

Havn't got the tuning down so it hasnt been to the track yet. Lets say that with a smaller turbo the powerband is much different.

As for difficulty, not hard and not too time consuming but you gotta know what your doing.

Was it worth it? Depends. If I am on country roads with few stops then HELL YA! When it comes to normal city driving, it is a mother fucking bitch to drive with even a stock clutch.

Why is it so hard, is it different from other standards?

Jumpy would be a good description, tends to buck at times. The clutch is also a bit more grabby then most. Compared to a 4cyl Eclipse its definately more difficult.

Now, I know already that people will jump in and argue with me here once they find this thread. Once you are stuck in an hours worth of rush hour stop and go traffic you'll understand.

MY Gertrag 284 hold up quite well in hours of traffic at 100 degrees high humidity and shifts as expected almost everytime.

To me this is the smoothest transaxle/clutch I have ever owned.

I drove Suzuki manuals, and about every other model GM implied into there 88-up vehicles.

The Getrag 284 was by far the easiest for me to drive and of course I do treat My getrag alot better than some of my older cars that hit the wind.

It also play a factor on how it was installed, what parts, and experience installing these the right way from a rebuild up. One small overlook can cause numerous reprocussions.

Age plays a factor, condition, and such thing as romping to the delight of your foot on every light does make the tranny upset. A decent cooler can help in hot climates as every tranaxle would.

At the time Getrag INC rebuilt the Transaxle and upgraded it, they also sent the previous owner a Getrag reccomended clutch kit which is installed. I don't know the numbers I forgot all I know it was speandy as I got the original paper work with my vin # on it.

I had my tranny down at my friends shop and he said it looks great and for being 7 years on a Getrag rebuild it appears to have vary minimal wear.

True.... UNTIL you remove that pos accumulator, then its a whole different game. Without the accumulator not only is the pedal effort decreased but the clutch has a lot of feel to it, you can feel it engaging in the pedal and such, a lot of much needed feedback is gained and engagement is much smoother (all based on my experience). Not to mention crisper shifts when you desire and smoother when you desire and perhaps the most important factor is that the longevity of the synchromesh is preserved and not as prone to premature wear. As far as hard to drive... eh. Even with the accumulator its not bad, it is different from most other cars I think though. My getrag 282 in my beretta is much notchier than my 284 in my grand prix, the 284 is a very smooth motion through the gears, I think out of many manual transaxles I've driven, rowing the 284 through the gears is the smoothest.

if you have a 284 and the accumulator is still there:

Mind to expand on this a little?

I have a stock clutch with the accumulator removed. Now to what I was saying, I never said that the 284 didn't shift beautifully nor did I say that it was not reliable. What I did say was that it is a bitch to drive in the city.

FYI, I think the 284 is one of the smoothest shifting transmissions I have driven, has a nice solid smooth feel to it. But when the clutch is grabby and the engine decides to start bucking real bad at low speeds it makes for city driving to be a chore.

I remember this all to well from when the 91 first got the swap before Ben got to tune it. Actually it bucked for a good long while, and I can't remember what Ben figured out what it was to stop it. No more bucking though!
