  • MSD Ignition Control Module Vs. Stock

Ok heres my problem, my ignition conrol module went out in my car the other day driving home from work, i dont wanna putanother stock one in because they are to hard to get at and they always seem to go out, i want to put in an msd ignition control module and coil packs, out of these 3 which one can i use to completly replace my ignition control module in my car?

remeber im trying to save money so the cheap ones if they work ill take them.
    thanks

non of them. the first 2 are for distributor ignition. you can use the last one (the dis4 or dis4+) however you also need the coil adaptors. this however doesnt replace the ignition controll module (coil plate), it is used in conjunction with it.

hmmmm thats crappy. do they sell a unit that replaces the icm? im getting 2 cylinders not firing, and i know its not a coil pack because i replaced the coil that wasnt firing and it didnt help. thanks

What about the wires or the plugs?

well i know its not the plugs becuse there is no spark comming from the wire, and i highly doubt it is the wires because they are newer and dont seem to be damaged or burned , and it cut out while i was driving so i doubt it is the wires but nothings imposible. im heavily leaning towards bad icm, the wierd thing is that it runs fine when you start it up cold but acts up when you redline it, or bring it past 5k . im just gonna drive it for a few days and see what goes on, i just wont beat on it i guess.

I've found the fastes and easiestway to remove the dis is to unbold each coil witha 5.5 mm socket. Way faster than removing the plate. of couse th fans got to be moved

Why did they put your coils so close to the headers? Took them 5 years to figure that one out.

If you can see it, it's easier for the average joe repair man to replace it, taking away from dealership time, lol j/k

yeah i know the easiest way is to unbolt the coil packs, but its still a huge bitch on the 3.4L dohc, cuz the a/c lines run right in front of it, and u have to wait friken 3 years for the engine to cool down before you can even go down there.

that looks cool, you think if you run a cold induction system there would be enough room to place the coils there, and how you thing that would look .i really love the way your oil breathers look,on a thread you gave the part you use ,can you do that again.
i just love to watch the wheels turn around and around

My suggestion would be go to a junk yard.. find a car with a 96 or 97 3.4L DOHC engine.. take the bracket system and mounts off it, pull yours off... reroute the wiring, and mount it up top next to the power steering pump. Yes this seems like hard work.. but the last time my ICM failed it took me 6 minutes and 41 seconds to change it. It would have been faster but I couldn't find my 5.5mm.
Then go to an Autozone or O'Riellys or whatever you have up in Ontario and buy one that is a Lifetime.. let them pay for it to break every year or two
