The coolant is what cools the head, the oil cools and protects the valvetrain. If you don't have oil pressure you will kill bearings before you overheat your head and warp it. Your lifters will tick like crazy as well.

Yup. I've been there done that on the coolant and oil starvation to the heads. That will kill them for sure(but they're fixable...), but that's about it. Heat kills headgaskets. Period. Coolant prevents that from happenning. If your oil pump takes a shit on you, you've got MUCH bigger problems than heads.

thats the ****ed up thing, we checked everything out & the bottom end was good (i figured it would be smoked because the motor was working fine 1 minute, then the next it was steaming hot, ticking TERRIBLY, & ceased to start & run at all), the coolant & shit all checked out but the the topend was destroyed. i was told my oil pump was more than likely bad but there may have been other problems. the thing that im curious about is the fact that i have found about a dozen of these cars around here & they ALL need the heads replaced-wtf?

oh and just to add, i had done no engine work on this vehicle besides replacing 3 spark plugs (is there an easy way to get to the ones in the rear or do u have to take a bunch of shit off?), topping off the oil, & putting gas in it (never had a problem with the coolant), so it definitely wasnt a mistake that i made in assembly (the damn spark plugs went in just like the dozens of 4 cyl motors that ive put them in- being the way the plug is recessed the way it is lol). all i know is that i loved that damn car & poof-it was gone!

Again. You say all the ones you've found needed the heads replaced? Are you kiding me? That means that every one of those heads was cracked beyond repair, or warped so bad that they couldn't be planed down enough, or someone took a shotgun to them or something, because these are some of the highest tolerance heads I've worked with. And some of the most solid(I don't have a whole lot of DOHC head experience though, mainly OHV and SOHC).

And If you needed a set of heads, I have some here complete with valves for 100 shipped...
