im just curious if any of you have any idea how much hp a 90-93 3.4 quad cam would potentially have with 1500 invested in a turbo kit? im not talking max, im just curious roughly (at the least) would the car gain at say 7 psi (with an intercooler too, by the way)?

at 7 psi with good sized turbo and setup, you should be able to crank 300-350 horse. i don't think that's unreasonable.
think about how awesome that would be. but don't lose sight that 1500 bucks is a tight budget. and adding a turbo is a lot of work. I don't want to discourage because the quad cam v6 rocks. but i simply wanted to swap in that engine into one with a 3.1 pushrod. it's 3 years later and i've spend a rediculous amount of hours and i try not to think about how much money i've spend on the project.\'90 Cutlass with \'95 3.4 DOHC V6

7 psi with a $1500 turbo kit would get you between 225 and 275 whp.
300 isn't going to happen on that little boost with that little money unless you're really, really good. With a good, properly sized, new turbo, the higher end of that range is realistic. With a rebuilt turbo or a turbo from another car, you would be lucky to be at the lower end of that range. At that price range, you will also probably be on a FMU. They aren't the best choice to make lot of power. If you have a chip burner and get junkyard injectors, you might be able to do better tuning for just as cheap, but most people don't/won't do that.
$1500 turbo kits generally involve compromises. The main compromises are usually power and reliability. My original kit was under $2k and ran all new parts (except for the BOV), but did have some serious compromises. Trust me when I say that 300 whp is NOT as easy as slapping on a random turbo and upping the boost to 7 psi.

Haha, no shit. These motors are very hard to put turbos on. I had a very well know shop do all my piping, and the only reason that I got it done for 1200 was becasue the guy really liked my car and it was all apart. The motor was the only thing in. He said that it was one of the tightest spaces that he had ever worked with. As far as money goes $1500 is not going to be enough. I saved up and put parts together since I was 17 to make my turbo 3.4. I have all the e-mails from timg as well asking all my dumbass questions. I sepend in the neightbor hood of 3-4k. Thats with everything. I am going to be tuning soon and thats another grand in injectors, tuning, exahust. Shit adds up. If you spend 1500 on a kit, its going to be mostly used parts. I borught all the top of the line parts. You dont want ship parts when speing 3500 on a motor. I do have to say my car is a bad ass car now. People come up and ask me all the time "what the hell is this". Its the highlight of my day, and smoking mustang cobras and bmw twin turbos is even better. But yeah its all about how much patients you have. Hope this helped. By the way here is a pic for ya.

you can make a turbo kit for $1500 but its not going to make anywhere near 300+hp.
Non Intercoold 5ps: ~250hp. Need better turbo ect. for more HP/TQ
Ebay T3/T4 Turbo ($200)
FMU ($120)
Flanges/Gaskets/Hoses/Clamps/Ect... ($350)
Stock Log Manifold form J/Y ($30)
Custom X-Over/Downpipe/install labor ($1000)
Intercooler 7psi: ~270hp
Ebay special ($200)
Custom Piping ($300)
extra clamps/couplers ($50)
2.5" exhaust ($500)
this is what i would expect to happn. if you wanted to be on a budget... The ebay turbos are not good for high boost or reliablity... But they work until you can afford a better turbo.... like everyone said, more money can buy better parts and make more power. but 250-270WHP makes enough power to make it fun on the street.
Im making 289.9hp and 277tq on 7psi. tim made i think 325hp and 350tq on 10psi. but keep in mind we have good shiznit and tuned. im thinking of bigger injectors (60lb) on e85 and ~12psi otta be fun....

if it's not too much trouble i would be greatful to have one. mostly need to know what kind a size turbo, BOV,.... basically pretend you were teaching yourself how to do this. cuz i know fluck all about turbo's and all the gadgets that go with em'. but i do know i want to put a turbo on my dohc. i am so obsessed with your engine compartment i accutally set it as by background on my desktop. i love my car and i want to make it move. so i need to know prettymuch everything involved i.e. timing and whatever else there is to know.1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme International
