  • lq1 stock oil pressure?

Does anyone know with certainty what the stock oil pressure is for the lq1? On gmpartsdirect they sell an oil pressure spring for 60 degree v6's that puts the oil pressure at 70 psi. I am considering adding that to my list of parts for the rebuild on my spare 3.4

minr is usually at 3/4 on the gauge cold and at a warm idle its between 1/4 and 1/2. if that helps any.

No, I'm looking for the specs on what psi the oil pressure is stock? I wanted to know how putting in that spring to run at 70 psi would compare to the stock oil pressure spring.

Haynes lists it as 15PSI @ 1100 RPM. Doesn't seem like much, but maybe volume is high. I'd like to know also. Damn gauges just have silly lines.

the spring is just a bypass spring anyway. the tightness of the motor and condtion of the motor is what controls the psi.

Are you sure that the spring doesn't regulate oil pressure? This is exactly what the description of the spring says on their site: "Oil pressure in V6/60º engines is regulated by a spring in the oil pump cover. This spring (color coded with a blue stripe) will produce approximately 70 psi oil pressure." I realize that pressure will vary depending on rpm, temp, motor tightness, viscosity, etc. But I figured the spring regulated what the max would be.

That has always been the case on every GM engine I've done. I assume it still is.

well the way i understood it was that if the oil filter were to become clogged or the pressure were to try and exceed 70psi the springs job was to bypass the filter to bring the psi back down to a safe level. but mabey im misunderstood.

increasing your pressure will just cause a power loss. I am just under 80 PSI cold, about 30-40 warm idle and up to the 60s at WOT, maybe 70+ but im not staring at my oil pressure gauge at WOT.

The stock TDC pump will provide all the pressure te engine needs. On top of that a tight motor will cruise around at 60-65 psi . The TDC pump is a form of HV HP pump already.

Okay from what I'm hearing there is no need to change out the oil pressure spring in the pump. I am getting a new pump as part of my rebuild and I'll leave it at that. However I think I'll buy a good oil pressure gauge so I can accurately monitor the pressure in the engine I am rebuilding.
