  • Rebuilding my LQ1...

Hey I am new to this site.. I found it through the mymonte.com forum. I recently blew a head gasket and am going to be pulling my motor out of my car and replacing alot of stuff on it.

Here is a list of stuff im planning on doing and I am just asking for some ideas on how to get some extra hp outta my motor.

Rebuilding the head with a head rebuild set (head gaskets, intake manifold gasket, exhaust manifold gaskets, etc).
Replacing the timing belt & serpentine belt.
    Fix the o-ring leak.

I think im going to send the upper and lower intakes to get P&P'd and move the battery to the trunk and install a fender well intake. I'm also deciding whether or not to get the cams reground.

I saw that in the store this site sells 35mm lifters, so I am definately also considering that now, I'd love to turbo this car with the extra t3/t04e that I have at my house but i dont know if i want to spend that much money, So other than turboing what can I do to make some extra power other than the things I mentioned, and what else should I be replacing on my motor. One of the last things I do will be install a exhaust system (Either flowmasters or magnaflows)

Also if your a person with any of the mods im planning on doing what do you think of them.. ??

I'm doing the same thing right now, not sure if I blew a head or an intake gasket yet though. Here is a list of things I have planned. I'm probably going to have the car off the road for 8 to 12 months, I don't need it now, school is accross the street...

-96 heads, exhaust manifold, upper and lower intakes (I was just given a price of $150 Canadian each for the heads)
    -180* thermostat
    -2.5" or 3" downpipe
    -High flow cat
-high performance mufflers (looking at Flowmaster 40's or Magna flow)
    -P&P heads and intake
-Ford SOHC springs and some spacers from the 60degreev6 store
-35mm lifters from the 60degreev6 store (this is a maybe...I think its one of the more expensive things on this list, we will see how the budget works out)
-Poly engine mounts and dogbone from FFP
    -FFP Underdrive pully
    -Battery relocation
-FWI (K&N filter boxed into the fender, maybe even with a scoop under the car to redirect the air)
-Performance chip from 60degreev6 store (by the time the car goes back on the road, development of the chip will probably be done, lol)
-coil pack relocation to the passenger side fender with shorter spark plug wires
-transmission rebuild, not 100% on the extent of that work
    -tranny cooler

Lots of work ahead of me...knowing me this list will probably grow as I do more and more research. This list doesn't even include the aesthetic mods I have planned, should be getting paint next spring!

Thats a nice little list of mods, do the Ford SOHC springs really make a big differnce? I was thinking of that mod to.. I'm also considering getting the cams reground to a meaner profile.

I find the off the line LQ1 performance is pretty insane already.. I would love to get more out of it but I want there to be more top end pull, cause those gears are long and I wanna pull through them way harder.

I don't know if the springs will help or not, but I know they fit. I would use them over stock spring on a rebuild myself, or shim stockers if its a mild rebuild.

One of these days ill start my porting research on the heads. Intakes I can do though I haven't put them on the store yet cause I haven't had time to port a set of intakes to take pictures. Haven't thought much on pricing either since the lower intake could use a reshape in the runners. Much more work than a gasket match here and a blend there.

Chip will hopefully be done, but I have to fix the ignition problem on the car first Any idea how much fun it is to get to the crank position sensor with an automatic? Ugh.

I'm not sure how much of a difference to expect from any single one of the mods, I just know that all together I should notice a considerable increase in performance. I'm also swapping all the struts for KYB GR2s and I'm building front and rear strut tower braces.
My original plan when I got the car was to do this list over time and watch my track times get better. I never even made it to the track and now i have to rip appart the engine. I figured seeing as I'm ripping it appart and the collision insurance is off the car, I may as well look into doing my list. (pulling the insurance probably got me a rebate from my insurance company of around $2000) Just make my life easier that way rather than ripping the engine down several times. I think my plan will be to get all the parts together then tare into it. If I can't find a better price on heads and intake stuff I'm probably just going to end up getting the 95 stuff ported and polished. Maybe I will even get the manifolds cleaned up and coated...get a nice ceramic coating in there they should flow a BIT better.

thats what I am going to do. I am going to spend the next like 6 months gathering all the parts I need then do it all at once. Unless I sell my other car (1993 Asuna Sunfire) if i do that then i'll have the money to do this in the next few months.

If I grind the cams shouldnt I think about getting more fuel into the mixture since im going to be adding more air?

            Fuel pump and injectors?

About the mufflers, i am on my second Z34 and both times i have gone with Magnaflow. I love the way they both sound. My first one had a deep sound to it, not like a V8 deep but deep nonetheless, and my current Z34 i just had the exhaust done and i went with your basic Magnaflows, i talked with many people about Flowmasters on these cars and they said that they were too raspy and obnoxiously loud for their taste. It all matters on what your tastes are.

Stock injectors are fine for a cam regrind, cam timing change, ported, etc. They will let you do quite a bit before they need to be upgraded or higher pressure ran through them.

Ceramic coating the intakes isn't going to make them flow better. It will help dissipate heat faster but I am not sure how well that will work with all the aluminum on the motor anyway.

I figured I would just coat the exhaust manifolds...never even considered doing the intake parts, I just figured I would have them ported and polished along with the heads

exhaust work. get some1 to port your exhaust manifolds. what is your mileage? perhaps look into a high flow cat as well. it would be a good idea since u are doing your intakes and a FWI. the old more air in more air out philosophy. i am guessing u have a 95 monte????? if so the only person i know that can do those memcals is a user called darthfiero on pennocks fiero forum. he charges $40 but u will need to tell him what to do.

ben(sappyse107) may be able to do the memcals now. not sure, ask him. i think he charges in the neighborhood of $120 last i checked but he has lq1 tuning experience and will not require much direction as darth would.

ud pulley is a good investment. if u are strung for cash i would rule out porting the heads then. since u have everything out and your auto is doing good try a 3k stall. about the best thing u can get to wake up that anemic 4t60e. according to heresay a 3k stall shaves off 3 tenths off of your et's. try a little weight reduction like removing carpet padding and such for a little(tiny, not noticable) bit of help.

depending on where u live and emissions. u can for-go getting a high flow cat and just gut yours, couple that with a high flow muffler or muflers depending on your setup and u should see a little something on the ass dyno. ffp dogdone may help especially if u get a stall.

I dont understand what you mean by memcals.. Yes my car is a 1995.. The mileage on my motor is 250,000 KM.

I have about $3000 to spend on all of this. I'll be doing the work myself, with help from friends who are mechanics.

Who makes a under drive pulley for the LQ1? and where can I get this ffp dog bone you speak of?

I live in Ontario, Canada so I will be getting a high flow cat because I can make my car pass emissions. From the responses i've heard I think magnaflows are the way i'm going.

After all is done i'm going to send my car to get tuned on a dyno to get the most out of everything and make sure I dont blow up anything because if I dont end up turbo'ing this motor I will end up running nitrous on it.

I'm from Ontario as well...small world eh?
the whole memcals thing is over my head as well...at the same time i know I have read it elsewhere...

FFP (Fast Fwd Performance) makes the underdrive pully you want (currently out of stock according to the site), they also make that dog bone. I would post a Link, but I dunno how Ben feels about me posting another companies site, I don't want to be stepping on anyones toes

Their Poly dog bone goes for about $65 US and the underdrive pully is another $85, but like I said before the underdrive pully is out of stock
