  • Borla XR1 muffler

well a friend of mine kicked my ass in his Z34 auto 91...no mods, xcept a Borla XR1 muffler were the cat was and then straight 2.5 to duals. At the time i had only the pulley, cone filter and the flowmasters and he pulled on me like WTF??!?

i found the muffler on JEGS and i wanted to ask everyone...would only that JEGS "Proven Race Muffler" really help???

GM tolerances while building these engines, along with condition of the engine after x amount of miles will easily explain your race. Some of these cars are pretty damn quick stock, and others are dog ass slow. I wouldn't look for that muffler to produce any miracles. It could produce 1-2 hp over another, but the cat is pretty restrictive. Full flow would likley be more worth getting.

i dont remember were i read it but the tolerances issue was brought up in a debate about quick cars...one guy only had a 3 inch downpipe on his DOHC the other was mildly to heavy modded and the guy wit the 3 inch dp kicked his ass.

My new exhaust plan is 1 flowmaster were the cat is and straight pipe it all the way to either duals or single exit

I dont honestly see how a 3 inch downpipe is going to be beneficial to these engines stock. The stock downpipe is 2.5" and the cat is 2.5", so a larger cat would be needed.

I dunno how it will sound with what you propose but good luck. I bet its going to be loud.

          Check them heads...Cam carriers

          Possible timing issue..

All I know is after putting a butt load of maintanance these car kick major ass.

I am not going to brag, but lets just say I win some and I lose some.

Cats can only get so much flow to stay within the 50 state legal statute. So reguardless of which cat you get most of them stay with in the limits to allow the catalyst to burn correctly. In my opinion aftermarket cats are a waste of money and effort.

I don't know if GM sell it still, but I got a NoN-cali sport tuned high flow cat from the dealer awhile back. I hooked it up to a flow meter at the local speed shop and for the price it is competitive with mostly all aftermarket cats. The cat I got was about half the length as a regular cat, but a bit fatter. It has less catalyst than stock, which in turn is the same as drilling or gutting a stock cat half way (which I don't reccomend BTW).

It will be loud, yes I can here it coming now.

I guy across the street did that to his late model dodge dakota and it sounds pitiful...To get an idea just stick your tongue out and try to whistle.

If it is that bad on a dakota, just think what it would sound like a DOHC engine.

I got Dynomax ultra Flos and it is load but mellow rumble, bit rasspy in the morning.

It will really have a gatling sound to it and police might be curious as to why.

I should get my GTP dynoed. I am not absolutly sure on what was done to this car before it ended up in my hands. It may have been raced on a circuit in the day I dunno, but it has darn good power.

I like electronics ALOT more than alot like mount everest alot!! if fact I am getting a degree for it so you just think on what I can do ..After while I might go for engineering possibally masters degree. PCB's are easy to modify

BTW AT mods are junk so are most other quote 'resistor mods'

I have run a stock DOHC system without the muffler, and then a high flow cat without a muffler and trust me, the high flow cat is a ton louder. Sure its not full flow with a cat on there but I don't recommend running on the streets without a cat. Environment vs a few hp. I put the DOHC system on my 3.1 car and I can run it without mufflers on the streets without too much of a problem. I put a muffler on there though just to keep it quiet. That cat is very restrictive and its a small cat. My new one is 1.5 times the size.
