  • Hood Vents

I have been thinking about this for awhile. Right along the thought of using a CAI (Cold Air Intake), that everything at a cooler tempature (well trying to get it reasonable anyway) should produce more power.

I know the older Lumina Z34s had hood vents (I assume they actually were working) and as the car rolls down the road the cooler outside air blows under the car, and the hottest (heat rises) air under the hood is blown up and out through the hoods. Didn't they make a few Pontiac GPs this way too?

Anyone actually measure and see if it makes a difference? I have an Olds Cutlass.. just wondering on our side.

Yes, the 91-96 GTP's had the louvers. But they were blocked off, really only for show. But you could easily remove the covers and make them functional.

They're not blocked off, they just have drip pans on them in order to keep water off of everything under the hood when it rains(go put your hands over one of the louvers after you've driven somewhere...heat definitely pours out of them). The hood louvers are placed in a low pressure area on the hood so that they actually draw air out from under the hood when you are up to speed(air flows over the louvers and "extracts" the air from underneath the hood...that's why they're commonly referred to as "heat extractors").

If you want to know if yours work, spill a little coolant on your crossover pipe and run the engine for 10 minutes. Turn it off and loook at your hood. I bet you see steam coming out of the louver!

So do you think lowering the under hood temperature is a good thing? Why not the Olds? or the basic Luminas?

I remember the old 50's and 60's cars had "portholes" to help do the same thing

Heat build-up under the hood has got to cause other issues, not to mention your radiator doesn't cool as well, your engine run hotter, the electrical cables deteriorate faster..

not to mention 50s and 60s cars ran shitty carbs that would percolate under heat.

Also you want to pull the heat out from under the hood not push cold air in. You will get more air exchanged this way and you wont be forcing the air under your car.

Well obviously the lumina z34 and gtp's catered to a diffrent kind of consumer than the cutlass or even the base models of those cars. Therefore marketing prolly liked the idea and thought it looked kinda sporty. Kudos to them for even caring enough to make them functional. I can see the cutlas looking goofy with them though. But they would have been a good idea on all 3.4 equipped cars. These motors just seem to put off more heat than their bretheren.

Hey, if someone comes up with something for a Cutlass, lemme know. I want to do something, and the stock hood might could even be a guinea pig, as the leading edge is all rusted, and needs to be replaced. I'm working on heated washer nozzles for hood placement right now, but if someone comes up with hood vents, I know I'd like to do something like that. It's hot under there.

Here's a Cutty(white convertible) with heat extractors from the late model Daytona edition Grand Prix's(also found on "Special Edition" Grand Prix's around the 2000-2001 model year).

I can look up the part #'s for those louvers & attaching hardware if you're interested(I've posted them for someone else on another board in the past).

And those are functional as well, 'eh? That looks pretty decent, in my opinion. Are they GM part numbers? I'll poke around for 'em, but if you can come up with them, even if just to verify my findings, that would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 95 GTP with the hood louvers...anyone think it would make any difference at all removing the drip pans from under the louvers? maybe allowing the air to move out more freely?

Pretty sure they're open underneath(with drip pans for ran underneath)...I'll dig up some underhood shots from a late model GP with them if I can.

Those are the part #'s from the Daytona hood louvers. According to gmpartsdirect the louvers are $162/each through them....you might want to start searching junkyards and hope you come up with a Daytona 'Prix there.

                              mfewtrail is correct on this.

as air is moving over the hood it creats a low pressure on the louvers pulling the air out that why they appear backwards (gtp) this increases the effect. Like putting a straw in a cup of fluid and blowing across the top pulls fluid from the bottom of the straw to the top. Z's are to the side.
