  • ACCEL Super Coils + Custom wires...

So as everyone (or at least anyone who read my post in the General Section) knows, I'm relocating my ICM (and thus, coils). I need to know a few things...

1: Does anyone have any experience with the Accel Super Coils? P/N 140017. I ask because one of my coils is cracked so I figure I will need a replacement soon, and maybe there is some performance to be had by upgrading all three? I know there is a lot about how ignition does not affect performance more than slightly, but it can't hurt, can it? Or am I better off with stockers? I need advice soon though because I'd like to order one or the other by Wednesday.

2: Where can I get some custom wires? I know I will need to custom make them, I just need some advice on doing so: i.e. what boots, what manufacturer, tools, etc. I've never crimped / cut custom wires, what should I know going into it?

    accel coils

I have heard a few horror stories about accel coils in various places. Never heard anything bad about there fuel injectors. I don't know if it was just random incidences but the specs look great on them. Everyone I know uses the MSD coils. About 10 dollars more expensive and you have to get them from a local dealer or ebay. You could also search around but typically they run about 39 each, you can find some dealers to sell you 3 for 120. You can buy the same exact MSD coils (atleast i have been told this) at summit racing marketed as Summit coils for 32.95. Part number SUM-850017

As for custom wires.. most parts stores sell wires without the ends on them so you can cut them. I did that a bunch of years ago, usually now I just make friends with a parts store and we look at all the ones that will fit and buy them or two boxes that give me the right length. You might also check with Magnacore if you dont' mind spending alot, I am sure they make custom wires, you just probably don't want to know the price. I hear the 8.2mm Taylor custom wires aren't bad.

Why not use the 96/97 spark plug wires if your moving coilpack/ICM to where 96/97 setup is?

Remember tho, your only as strong as your weakest part.

I'm not moving it there though, too much work redoing the power steering lines, I'm gonna bolt the ICM to the shroud above the radiator, so they will have to be custom lengths.

I'll check up on the MSD coils.
EDIT:: What is the actual part number for the MSD coils? Not the summit ones, just for reference?

          MSD Ignition Coil

GM 2-Tower Coil Pack, PN 8224

          check it out at:

have to find someone to buy it from. MSD doesn't sell direct. Been really good deals on like 1 pack (yeah we need 3) or pairs (all those cavaliers and and 4 bangers) on ebay lately.

              RE: MSD Ignition Coil

MSD also has the proper tool for striping and crimping the wires. As far as part numbers, just knock the MSD off the front of the summit number- this works for all the stuff summit sells. I bought a roll of 8mm Taylor wire and a couple boxes of silicone boots, and I haven't had any problems and like the results I get.

                RE: MSD Ignition Coil

I have heard of 2 people now having problems with the MSD coils. I witnessed one of them actually. The Accel coils suck, I know of 5 people personally who had problems including myself plus the other messages I have read on them. Stick with stock, its plenty of juice for even boost and nitrous so I doubt you are going to get a whole lot from anything more powerful. THe MSD DIS-4 MIGHT do something for performance but I know for a fact that it helps gas milage.

Magnecor wires can be bought at custom lengths direct from magnecor. Just tell them the lengths. They aren't the cheapest but the last forever (or close enough), offer great RFI and EMI suppresion, and their customer service was wonderful for me when I had a problem.
