  • 96 manifold swap questions

ok i just got pretty much all of the parts for the swap but have some questions.

    1. the pip that goes from the water outlet from the water pump infront of the engine is that nessessary. if you seal off the water outlet and seal the intake manifold what is the purpose. it cant be fore heat because the heater core attaches to the throttle body nipple and gets water from the upper radiator hose
    2. do you really have to cut the tps sensor wire is there any way to get it to fit.
3.for the cables why cant you just switch out the hole assembely that theplate is attached to. then you will have the factory cable holders

i have a 94 z34 and dont have a map so is there any way to block off the hole on the intake tube

I can only answer 1 and 2 for you since I used a different throttle body/intake arm, and MAP.

    1. There are 2 pipes that run from the 96 lower intake manifold (LIM). The back one goes directly into the throttle body, then servers purpose as a heater core feed line. The next line, front, runs directly from the LIM to the water pump inlet, bypassing the radiator. It also has a T in it near the airbox for the heater core return. You can block off the front LIM line and the water pump inlet nipple, but I wouldn't suggest it. This system also provides another purpose. It prevents overpressurization of your heater core under high rev, cold motor conditions when you are at 4000+ rpm, and your thermostat is closed. At this RPM, your water pump is flowing, pumping, a lot of water. With the T-stat closed, the only place for it to go is to the heater core, which can cause a lot of damage there. Therefore this line serves as a pressure bypass as well, and should be included. Just block off the T that is used for the heater core return.

    2. The TPS sensor should be the same on the new TB as your old one, so long as your new one is GM. So your old plug should work fine (Mine did on a LS1 throttle body), but may require you to lengthen the 4 wires that go into the TPS plug (I had to add about 4" to the length so that the plug would reach).

    I hope this has helped.

RE: Re: 96 manifold swap questions

ok i wont cut the wires i will have to find another way to do that. but for the black pipe. the one on the 96 goes from the front pass side in front of the exhaust manifold to the lim and then it goes from there and comes out the nipple which attaches to the threttle body and i dont know where it is suppose to attach there. what is this tube called and in order to attach it you have to take off the front exhaust manifold. do you have any pics

in order to do the swap the right way i will just go ahead and get that pipe. now the cables on the other hand how do you get those to work the right way and also would i have to replace the fuel lines

The back line goes to the throttle body, then has a nipple right afterwards. This is your heater core feed line. The front line goes around the motor to the water pump. This line also has a line coming off of it, which is the heater core return. On the 91 motors, the heater core return routes around the other side of the motor, into the water pump. So just ignore the piece that comes off of the front line, cap it and leave it alone.

I can't help you with the cables as I used a different throttle body in a different position. I used 3/8" fuel lines to connect the 96 fuel rail with the 91 lines, with a hose clamp at each end. I had to cut the end of the 91 fuel lines off.

i looked at my car and i dont have a map sensor i have an engine load. same position but no connector. and also my wires are ran differently my look the 96 the 92 wire goes from the back so i think my tps sensor will fit. also the fuel lines do i have to bend them or anything to make them work

Yes you should. I've answered the second part twice now. The front line has a T off of it, it is the heater core return, cap it as your return runs on the passenger side. Let me just get you some pics.

As for the MAP. Your car is a MAF car, so no worries about the MAP. But the vacuum collector on your upper intake manifold, unbolt that and remove it. Then pop out the freeze plug in the 96 manifold, and put your vacuum collector in it, with 1 bolt on the side (The other bolt won't line up, but one will hold it fine). This will get you 2-3 extra vacuum ports, that way you don't have to tap your intake at all.

I also already answered this. You will need to cut yours, then use fuel line from a parts tore (cheap, 3/8" feed, 5/6" return) to connect your factory lines to the 96 rail.

the fitting from my car now i have to cut off, and in the picture it shows some nuts on the nipple of the lower intake manifold that attaches to the throttle body what does that connect to becuase it also looks like it has a brakcet also

ok if i get that pipe that runs in infont of the exhaust manifold and the heater core pipes and the throttle cables then i should be good.
                        1. do you think the tps line will fit since i have different wiring
                        2. if i put the vaccum port in the side of the 96 plenum will the 94 tranny line work. and what happens if i dont hook thins up,also can i get rid of anything else if i do this.
3.i just want it to look clean and dont want to cut or splice anything. that bring me to the 96 cruise cable how do i hook those up.

thanks that should be all my questions

                          1) As I said before, I don't know.
                          2) Yes it will work, every vacuum line from the factory that was hooked up needs to be hooked up...
                          3) I don't know, I am using a different throttle body, as I also said before.
