  • Port and polish... worth the effort?

I was considering attempting to port and polish my heads and upper/lower intake and I was wondering if it adds a decent amount of power to the car? Also, are there still stock valves available (or maybe a performance model) for sale new anywhere? Thanks.

RE: Port and polish... worth the effort?

rockauto sells replacement valves. Custom valves would cost 25-35 each so yeah, not a lot of people want to do that.

Porting does a lot but you have to know what you are doing or you could hurt part of your powerband. I would practice on a set of heads first if you want to port them yourself. Its expensive to have them ported (i know, i sell them) but it is a safer route if you haven't done porting, know the theory in air flow and atomization of the fuel, or consider velocity over flow.

If you do it yourself, its safest to just remove the casting flaws, and smooth the flow through the bowl area past the valve seat.

Yeah, considering this would be a first time doing a P&P job I would not be doing anything too crazy. I was going to pull the heads soon anyway and replace that annoying o-ring on the oil pump drive (leaks oil like mad) while I had it all apart. Also I was considering trying the 48 gram lifters that you have for sale in your store, I figure as long as I would have it apart I might as well do as much as I can to it. Thanks again.
