  • 5 speed swap help.

ok we are doing the 5 speed swap into my brothers car this weekend and it has to be done for sunday. we already have the parts ripped out of the donor car, but the problem is the donor car is a 92 and our car is a 91 and the donor car has abs, which totally changes the wiring harness, so now we cant use the harness out of the donor car which is a piss off and the big question i have is about the air pump, i know on the automatic the one line from the map sensor runs to the tranny, and on the 5 speed it runs to the air pump, since we are not putting in the air pump what do we do? just plug the vaccum line? shit i know i have a few more questions but i cant think of them, oh well when i do ill post them, but answers asap will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

      RE: 5 speed swap help.

ok here is my other question, in the walkthrough on how to modify the wiring harness to switch to the 5 speed it says to take a red wire from the 8 pin round connector from the auto tranny and extend it to the switch hooked up to the clutch pedal under the dash which is a 4 pin connector, now thats good and all, but but wire do i hook it to, and also it says that that switch is a 2 way switch, one for the saftey starter and the other for this feature im trying to hook up, isnt the saftey switch for the starter on the toe board, it has 2 big yellow wires running to it and when you depress the clutch pedal all the way to the floor it hits the switch and allows the starter to turn over. well anyways i need to know which wire to hook it up to on the 4 pin switch . thanks

Yeah, that's my bad. When I wrote the write-up I didn't look under my dash to see which wire you hook it up to. I kept remembering to do it, and forgot just as quick. The car will fun completely fine without it, but you may get SES code 39. If you do, then you may want to hook it up. If you do, let me know and I'll go look under my dash and see what we did.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

ok we got the car all running today, nice and fast. we are getting a code 42 or 43 i cannot remeber whichone it is.so far there is no code 39 , but if i remeber correctly you said that the wire was for the cruise control , so when you press the clutchpedal it shuts curise off. well that feature is kind of important because cruise is used every day, and now when you press in the clutch it just revs up really high. so i would like to hook it up. and also we checked the timing belt while the engine was out and there is about 1/4 of an inch taken off the side, the belt is riding to close to the one side and eating the shit out of it. so i am going to order another belt tommorow. but what could cause this? i would like to fix it because belts are not cheap and i do not need the car leaving anybody stranded. thanks.

Check the tensioner pulley. When I first got my car and checked the belt, I found that the pulley itself was screwed up. It was riding in too close to the engine and had actually made a notch into the tensioner pulley bracket. That caused the belt to run slightly off track, so that the edge of the belt was riding against the lipped edges of the idlers, and starting to shread it. I don't know if the tensioner pulley was defective or if that is common but it was the problem.
