i have a 95 z34 monte and i was wondering about the cams and timing. If i advance the timing 13 degrees can i also advance my intake 7 and retard exhaust 6 without messing anything up. Or should i just andvance my timing without doing the cams or just the cams and no timing. I really would like to know what is best for this car.

well the typical 13* thing is retarding botht he intake and exhaust - but thats not the best for an automatic.. you may want to try something a little more mild like a 8 degree retard

for a tol to help make timing easier and accurate

8 degree retard on just the exhaust is all but pointless. THat much I do know. THe tool makes things a lot easier for sure, especially with anything that isn't 10 or 13 degrees since those are easily marked on the timing chain cover.
How do you advance your timing without doing the cams. Or the cams and no timing. Making no sense there.Ben

Quick question about Top Dead Center.
I used the pencil method to see when #1 piston was at top center.
I know that on the crank pulley there is a mark that lines up with block casting mark (pretty difficult to tell where the arrow is pointing).
But if you take the pulley off, there is a slotted key for the pulley; the notch is pretty close to center.
Question is: At top dead on balls center, will the notch line up with the center top of the engine (or the pulley that drives oil pump)?
Currently the notch is about -7 degrees, and it was that way when I pulled the pulley, maybe I moved it before I got it off. Interestingly, my exhaust cams were a little retarded when I pulled the engine. Maybe thats why it was so damn fast!

Running strong with new engine, transmission, brakes and suspension.
