  • 96 Intake swap

Ok, I read the write-up done by oldskoolgp(sp?), and it was very well written. In fact, made me realize that I still need to pick up a few parts. So tonight I was bored, got out my parts that I do have, and snapped some pictures of what I have so far http://community.webshots.com/album/330630391XMGWAp

So, I know that I need the intake, plenum, intake arm, and tb bolts. Is there anywhere that I can pick these up at?

Next, what is different about the cruise cable that it will not work with the newer style tb? Is it modify-able to get it to work, or is the only solution swapping the cables as well?

As for the vacuum lines, instead of getting the ones that are allready pre bent and at length, can I just go to the parts store and get my own lines?

    Thanks all.

    RE: 96 Intake swap

    What I don't see:
    -96 Fuel Rail
-96 metal fuel lines that run from the fuel rail to the rubber fuel line.
    -96 Upper thermostat housing
    - The bolts you mentioned.

Not sure where you can pick up the bolts. Dealer maybe?

You can get the cruise to work by cutting off the very end and putting an electrical terminal on it.
    Pic of what I did.

For the vacuum likes. Yes you can make the vacuum lines from the stuff at parts stores.

You'll need a 96 style ruel rail also. T-stat housing and throttle cable bracket. "?96 Throttle Cables (This is debatable, ?92 will work with some modding, but the cruise cable will NOT
?96 Coolant pipe that runs from the water pump junction across the front of the motor to the lower intake. A new O-ring for that can be gotten at any auto parts store, I used a ½? I.D. ¾? O.D. O-ring, it goes on really difficult, but will seal awesome."
"24505533 - Crankcase valley to PCV Valve Line. This is a metal line with rubber elbows, and it is not cheap. If you had a complete donor motor, get the one off of there if you can, otherwise it will cost you around $45 at the dealer, cheaper on GMPartsDirect, of course.

I wanna see a pic of the 96 TB, because I had to do a custom job but my cables mount up. I cut the TB portion off of my old plenum and had it welded to a plate that bolts up. Is the newer TB larger in diameter?

Yeah, I have the fuel rail here as well. Just wasn't pictured.

Those are in the writeup that I have saved, and are the parts that I need to get.

Ok, so looks like I will need to pick up some of those fuel lines. Anyone have a PN, or know of a 96-97 3.4 at a local JY? Same go's with the upper thermostat housing. As for the bolts, will any work from the current intakes that I have, or are they all different?
Thanks for the tip of the cruise control.

I tuned a 92 motor with the 96 top end last saturday. You will definetly want to reprogram the computer, as its terribly lean up top and drivability can be greatly improved on tuning as well. The engine I tuned had other work done so I don't know what all was head work, cam timing, decking the block, or the intake manifolds. I do know that just heads and timing don't affect the top end even remotely as much. Put it this way, stock is in the 8s for injector pulse width. Mine is in the low to mid 9s peak with ported heads and timing and pulley and tuning. This motor was at 10.7. Before tuning it was in the 9s still.

if you go to a dealership they should be able to get you TB bolts for about a buck I'd bet. As for the pulse width, could you please explain.

Not sure of a Part # for those fuel lines..

As for the plenum bolts. I used a couple of my 91 bolts on the 96 intake IIRC.
