  • Timing for Low RPM power

I've been toying with retiming my engine. The other day I advanced the intake about 4 degree and retarded the exhaust 4 degree (those are estimates, not scientific numbers). It had a nice straight power like from about 3500 up to at least 5500. I didn't rev any higher. At idle I could smell gas- strongly. I am looking to get power below 5000 RPMs since I have an automatic and the 4t60 doesn't like the heat from high revving. Anybody do any experimenting and find timing numbers that gave a good amount of low end power?

RE: Timing for Low RPM power

I will be trying 7 degrees retarded on the exhaust and 6 degrees advanced on the intake after I finish tuning the car for stock timing. I have read that it was good for the automatic, but I want to hear some more results. Since you have a 97 motor, your timing will have different results than the 91-95 that I am messing with now.

I was wondering about the same thing. I want more power down low for daily driving
