another exhaust question

i like to do stupid stuff to my car just to do something and waste time, so im thinking about chopping out the first muffler/resonator or whatever the hell it is directly behind the cat. will it sound like crap/not make a difference/ or sound a little better? im bored not getting any hours at work right now and yes i do have access to a welder and can weld ok.

Yes you can cut it off, it is a resonator, no it won't sound like crap, and yes it will help make tyhe engine flow better. But if you really want to have a good exhaust system, put a two and half inch exhaust system in with a high flow CAT and 40 Series Flowmaster Mufflers, It gave me 6 more miles to the gallon or went from 18Mph to 23Mph in the city delivering Pizza.

Well Flowmaster did not work for you, thats to bad, They work great on My 3.1 and I gained 6 more MPH, I went from 18mph to 24mph in the city delivering Pizza. I have two and half inch pipe from the engine to the bumper with a high flow CAT and two series 40 Flowmasters and 3inch tips, I tried the camaro tips, they sucked and so did the Dynomax mufflers.

I have hear good things about flows on a 3.1, but the DOHC is a totally different animal. Plus flows dont hold up to well at 7K rpm (internal baffles)

That I did not know, what does work with th DOHC? I have other friends that have those cars and want a good Exhaust system for that engine.

Don't get Flowmasters with the DOHC. I seriously wish people wouldn't post info about pushrods in the DOHC section. The DOHC has a COMPLETELY different sound than the pushrods. Magnaflows are the only way to go with the DOHC's. I blew out a plate in my old Flowmasters, plus it was too loud and sounded like garbage. Magnaflows make it sound like a race car. Not ricey, not TOO loud (I have a 10" resonator and I still set off car alarms regularly in parking structures) and good flow. Look through a Magnaflow, and you will see out the other side. Can you do that with Flowmasters? No.

Yeah magnaflow or dynomax is your best bet with a dohc

What about Borla? No one talks about them much.

Would they work well? I have been looking at the Turbo mufflers for about $100 apiece at JEG's, but my stock muffler's have not rusted out yet so I am going to save my money until then.

I'm running both Borla and Magnaflow on mine. Borla's are great mufflers. Any good straight through muffler will work. The AERO turbine mufflers may also be a good choice.

well, i chopped out the resonator but ran out of time so my weld sucks and i had to clamp on one end so i have an exhaust leak but ill fix it when my mufflers come in. i ordered magnaflows and hopefully will be able to install them next weekend.
