Yah my car sounds just like you described, here is a video of mine, it is the loud one that sounds almost like a buzz saw. Even tho the camera is in the Talon, you can barely hear it 
As for your headers, shorties aren't bad by any stretch of the imagination. They obviously still help, just equal long tube headers help a lot more. And the collector your using (I'm using very similiar), also helps becuz as someone told me a while back (forgot his name, might have been racerX11), they almost trick the cylinder into having longer primaries.
