  • Electric water pump

    Well since tearing the motor down, I got a chance to look at our water pump and cooling system more deeply. And since I will be adding an electric water pump when I put the motor in a Fiero, I figured I'd plan it out now.

    Does the water travel down the radiator, up the engine like normal, or up the radiator, down the engine?

    Our water pump is one fucked up design, it slides into that aluminum accessory bracketry thingy at the front of our motor, then bolts down. The water travels through passeges crafted in the aluminum bracket. I was going to mount an electric pump on the side of the motor, and then run a single hose into the entry of the aluminum thing(where the current pump draws its water from), and then craft a block off plate for the current water pump. This should work just fine, assuming water gets spread to both ports evenly, which it should if its under pressure.

    I also wanted to eliminate some of the hoses that I will not be using, but I need to take a closer look to see which ones do what, and what way the water runs through them.

        I saw the pics! It goes in the cylinders and into the oil pan..
        If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.

              Then how do you explain the drip coming out of the tail pipe?
              Silly, it's goes into the radiator, then it goes into the engine, past the oil pan gasket and out the tailpipe. I thaught everyone knew that already!

              I smell burning porkchop sandwitches. Got to run!

                Anyways, without the help of the DOHC performance pioneer, that seems not to want to help anyone else make a 3.4L DOHC perform well wihout personal profit, I figured it out.

                It is up the engine, down the radiator like normal. However some things are weird. The TB bypass, the coolant flows out the LIM, and some of it goes up to the TB, around it, then back down into a small pipe that runs along the front of the motor back to the water pump inlet. For some reason GM had the TB line, after it went through the TB, bypass the radiator. This line can be trashed, and plugged off at either end. The heater is also weird. It enters the core from the LIM line, snakes around, then goes to the core, then returns right near the TB return, into the inlet of the water pump. I would think that GM would want both of these lines to enter before the radiator, so they could pass through it. Guess not.

                As for the electric water pump, it is going to mount near the stock ignition and A/C(I'm taking out A/C), and pump water into the pump inlet. The heater is going to dump into a custom Y into the lower radiator line, right before it enters the pump. This way it bypasses the radiator like stock(They had to have a reason). I will probably have the line be steel, with rubber connections at each end, or just weld it into the Fiero's line. THis way I can just drill and weld a Y for the heater to return into. Or maybe Fieros already have provisions since they have the long coolant lines. I'll figure that out later. I will also make a block off plate as stated before where the factory pump slid in. Its a messed up design, but it should work. And the added GPM flow of the SBC electric pump will help cool the high compression, high RPM motor well.

                  Ok I have one more question. All of the pumps so far that I have seen are for standard engines, with a single inlet (supply), and dual discharge, like on a small block chevy. I need one that has a single inlet and single outlet or disharge. Smae diameter piping, kinda like the intake housing of a turbo, the shaft powered by an electrical pump with a built in thermostat or manual operation switch. I was thinking maybe a pump for an inline 4 would be single inlet/outlet.

                  Any ideas? I know the flow numbers I want and the amp pull, but I don't remember them. They are pretty high, higher than most performance SBC pumps.

                    don't know if this will help at all. but i remember seeing electric waterpumps being advertised for gmc typhoons they looked to be an in-line pump, but i don't know if they flowed enough to work though.

                    it might have been some kind of auxiliary pump for the intercooler or something.

                      If it is any type of aftermarket water pump, it should flow enough, that I don't think will be too much of a concern. I'll look into that!

                        you could always try to drvie the old pump with a motor, not very original but its where id start, not much fabricating to do, and the parts are cheap enough. how much would it need to flow? i think summit sells a kit for v8s that $80 (probably half that from ebay) im sure you can come with a 6cyl application for a fraction of that.

                          Well even tho it is for a V6, I want it to flow equal to or more than most SBC kits. It is in a Fiero, so cooling will be tough. Not only dealing with a sky high compression, high horsepower, high rpm motor, but having to pump the collant to and fro the front of the car. I don't want to use our current setup, I want to put a block off plate over it. Even if it cost me more (I doubt it), I'd rather generically mount one.
