  • COnfused about Mufflers

    People,

I am now confused about what exhaust system to put on my 3.4 drop top cutty.

I read nearly all the posts, and comments.

So far this is where I stand : 2.5" outlet with glass pack, and resonater as I will have a dual exhaust. I see most pople talking about flowmaster or magnaflow products.

What sound I want is a deeper sound, but not nice a hot rod or a suped up honda civic.

I nice clear deep sounds would be great. Somthing that resemlbes the car and not an import or a v8.

What type of mufflers are people putting on ? Ie magaflow 40. etc..

please email me at sunny_8@hotmail.com if you have sound clips.

If you have installed a muffler, please let me know what you did and if you have done it yourself.....i might be willing to try it..

    thanks

    Ok I called around.

Muffler shops say dont put on a maganaflow they are more for imports.

They say a flowmaster 50 delta flow muffler is ok.

Now why will i need a glass pack and resontor ?

If anyone wants to reply please do.

Magnaflow mufflers are not strictly for imports, but their "street series" is certainly made to cater to the ricer community. I have Maganflow universal fit mufflers on my car and I like the sound very much. You will want a resonator in there to clean the sound up a bit and reduce the raspiness inherent to the 60 degree. I have a 4" round Magnaflow magnapack in place of my stock resonator and it definately made a difference. While you are at it, get a Magnaflow/Carsound high flow cat and replace your stock cat.

I have Magnaflows as well, ask anyone who has them, everyone is satisfied. You definately need a resonator though.

If you have the stock tips, definately replace them with anything. Weld whatever tips you get RIGHT to the mufler. Trust me it will sound much better. Go to my cardomain site for pics of my exhaust install. I have tips welded to the mufflers, and I had them notch the little lip on the bittom of the bumper.

Rattle? Tap the cat lightly, and check the heatshield above the Y pipe

The rattle you hear may actually be what we refer to as "raspiness." To get rid of it you need a resonator. A pretty large one too, like 10".

well i have the stock resonator on there. wut if i just take it off? if that wont fix it then what should i look for like a magnapack or something? cause that rattle is really bad. i guess you can call it raspy. but its really annoying and kinda embarrassing.

                        I agree.

Just go to any muffler shop and ask them for a resonator. Say you want something to get rid of the rasp, like a 10" glasspack resonator.

I have a Magnaflow 4" round muffler (aka Magnapack) in place of the stock resonator. You can fit one with an 18" long body in its place. You will want to fit one as long as possible in there. First I bought a Thrush (by Dynomax) glasspack and the damn thing started to rattle loudly inside before it was a week old! So then I got the Magnapack and although it was a fair bit more expensive, it confirmed my beliefs that you get what you pay for. Also, I should say that replacing my stock cat (which turned out to be entirely hallow and making the raspiness far worse) with a carsound high flow cat did more to reduce the raspiness than the resonator did, but both made very noticeable differences.

I got magnaflows, 18" magnapack and carsound cat also, its not loud at all unless you really get on it, it sounds great. Only thing i dont like is that from the inside of the car at certain RPMs, I think it kinda sounds ricey, but outside sounds nothing like rice at all.

Okay I know all the info on the fact that we need a resonator.

But to the people who've had more than one: what is the actual smallest resonator we can use without having any of the rattle/raspiness? I'm going tomorrow to get a resonator (finally) installed and I still want my exhaust really loud, but I don't want the rasp! I know you can't have the best of both worlds, I'd rather get rid of the rasp.

If no one has any input by about 9AM tomorrow morning I'm going to just go to my exhaust shop and have them clamp on a 6", then a 10", and so on untill there's no rasp.
