  • Supercharging the 3.4...

Ok well my AC condensor(or compressor, im too stressed to remember the name) decided to start on fire the other day, so i'll be removing my air conditioning system all togethor. Which got me thinking, why dont i stick a supercharger inplace of the AC compressor... Which then made me realise getting the piping to the throttle body would be a little difficult...

But anways, is it possible? I know alot of people have gone with the turbo, but i think i'd rather it be a SCZ34 then a Z34Turbo. I was thinkin i'd want to be running at least a second faster... hopefully mid 13's so i can run with LT1's... Could even stick the supercharger near the top somewhere, between the heads maybe, and run that one plenum they have for the fiero's. Im hoping for around... 300-400hp possible? I know the stock internals are good for about 7psi, 11 if you want to be risky, or at least thats what i've gathered from older posts.

This is more a brainstorming session then a straight-up question, im sure this has been brought up before, but i want new fresh ideas and input, plus im too lazy to search :P .

I was thinking about putting a supercharger in that location actually, and piping it thru a front mount intercooler, then finding a way to plumb it up to the Throtle Body - I don't think it'd be THAT dificult.... but certinally a challenge. Especially for the intake on the supercharger.

The intkae on the supercharger wouldn't be dificult at all, just stick a cone on the supercharger. There is enough room for a small filter right below the passenger side fan.

As far as piping, it won't be that hard at all believe it or not. You will have to cut a little sheetmetal, but no biggy. Just run it behind the headlight kinda to the drivers side of the radiator, we already have a small hole for the factory airbox there, and just cut that a bit bigger.

The hardest part will be getting it bolted down and in line with the factory serpentine system that way you aren't wearing out belts every day. In a Fiero, you don't have power steering. It would be really easy to just set a Whipple roots blower on top of our LIM, and running the pulley right to where the power steering pump went.

I wish I could do that but my Z is a daily driver and I live in southeast texas. I was actually thinking about making that hole bigger by the radiator and put the air filter behind the headlight in the drivers side

Just curious, what type of supercharger would you put in the AC location? I know it that it would have to be centrifugal, but what kind? Would a Vortec fit down there?

I was looking at paxton, but vortec would be my most likely choice... its actually a fairly big space down there, im pretty sure a vortec would fit. I definately think this will be one of my projects this spring :P.

And just for shits and giggles i ran a paxton novi 2000 blower trhough desktop dyno on the 3.4, and it was looking at 210 torque at 1200rpm... and then 398hp and 403ft.lbs at 5500, and 405hp at 7500.
Those numbers are about as accurate as me firing a sawed off .22 into water, aiming for a sign 10 feet below... ... but i thought i'd share just for fun.

I'll have to try and find one of those. It'll be best if I do it now, since my engine and tranny are both out, then I could see what kind mods are required to make it fit and work right.

I think we can all agree that the 3.4 will eat up boost like crazy. I wouldn't be surprised that a well designed intercooled S/C system, with headers and exhaust to go with it, would make over 400hp.

There wouldn't have to be any computer mods other than a chip uprade, right? The MAP should be able to handle everything else, I'm guessing.

You would need a 2 bar map sensor and a chip programmed for 2 bar. The stock chip setup doesn't allow for this to be easily done. MAF setups don't need as much work to control the boost.

I like your thoughts, there Platinum. Paxton kicks ass.

And I wouldn't doubt a well designed charger kit from them would bring in well over 100+ HP at the crank.

And for room. Come on! If you can squeeze THIS in a vette

then a 3.4 compartment is like a trunk. Only problem is, Paxton would want a boatload of money for the kit, and that's even if they'll even remotely consider making it.
