What kind of mufflers sound the best with the DOHC. With or without the cat? Anyone have any good sound clips?

All depends on what you like. Me personally I own a V6 DOHC and want it too sound like a DOHC, so I like the sound of what most Imports use, the Straight through Mufflers with Tips mounted on them. I have straight pipe right now and it sounds great. Its raspy when first started but that goes away when warmed up.
Also please don't say you want a V8 sound. I hate it when people say they want their V6 DOHC engine to sound like a V8 pushrod!
One sound I would love to duplicate is a Ferrari sound. I heard a Fiero with a 3.4DOHC and it sounded just like the Ferrari Race cars. It even was done up like a Ferrari Repliac. Best sounding 3.4DOHC I ever heard. Too bad I never could figure out how they did it.1995 Pontiac GTP
Over $12K invested, and still its slow. Maybe thats because thats most all repairs. Don\'t knock the engine though, because thats the only part that has seemed to last.

Single exhaust has more backpressure. But that means slightly more low-end torque, with less high-end horsepower.
But it depends on the diameter of the pipes. I can guarentee you won't out-flow 2.5" pipes, single or dual, with this engine. My exhaust guy (been in business since 85) says 2.25 all the way to a 2.25 Y would be enough. You won't lose much, if any, power with a single 2.5" exhaust. If you're worried, buy mandrel bends (You'd need at least 3) from Jegs or Summit and have the shop use them in your system.
Also, a fake dual (read Y-pipe) exhaust system does not make a big difference in performance. It's mainly for looks and can, depending on the car, enhance or degrade the sound-quality.--Rob

Ok which of you is right, more back pressure = more power or less back pressure = more power.
I know more back pressure usually means more torque, and less means more horsepower. I would like both and im sure alot of other people does too.1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Z34

It depends on where you want the powerband. If you want more high-end power you want bigger pipes. If you want more low-end torque use smaller pipes. Generally with turbocharging or big ass displacement you just want the bigest pipes you can get.
I don't know what that guy was talking about more backpressure = more power. That's wrong. Look it up on the internet. Or ask a professional.--Rob

Not trying to be an ass, but you shouldn't hate on guys (like me) who try to make what they've been stuck with into what they want
BTW, Fiero guys actually buy Ferrari mufflers...a single muffler if I recall...might be interesting to look into!
