I have ben reading a lot of the threads on intakes and remembered this design from a ford v-6 sho. Was wondering what the guys with more brains then me would think how this would work as far as getting the air to the slugs. As far as i can tell this would be a great home made intake there would have to be a little design change and it would fit under the hood. So what do you guys. Just started playing with the 3.4l did mostly sbc and sbf so still learning on these motors .when i went to get this motor. Heard a lot of bad stuff. My brother knows the gm engineer that worked on this (just found this out) motors i was looking over the motor and saw a air dust on the back of the alt and wondered what it was for .my brother ask his friend what it was for and turns out that with out it the solder in the alt would melt . Just a little note there oh and here is a pic of the intake from the ford v-6 sho

what is your goal with the engine?
you can change the dynamics of the engine with intake runner length and plenum volume pretty easily. I'd stay away from that ford design, it's too complicated and you can tell it was done just for looks.
On a 3.4 DOHC i'd use short large size runners and a large plenum volume around 2 liters or so. That would give it plenty of breathing room.

I know ,all my point is that the intake would flow better then the stock intake and that the tubes can be adjusted. For torque curs and power longer tube more torque shorter tubes better low end. See what i mean. I under stand that the manifold needs to be tuned to the 3.4 tdc. But look at the potential of it. Oh yea i worked for ford in dearborn at the prototype shop on beach daily and michigan not there now but we were right down the street from roush performance.

The intake can be built, but as you yourself stated, you need different tube lengths. The issue then becomes how are you planning on controlling when the tubes are switched between?-Brad-

I see your point ,First I need t o figure out what I want more. upper end power and torque mid range or lower end Then it what gear is also in the mix. Were are you going to drive it purely street /strip of just car shows and show off when you leave or burn out contest . after all that then you would make tubes up for the different situations that you would run in to they would have to be changed out like you would back when you would go to the strip with a Holley double pumper and a set of different jets. Same would go here. Different size tubes or fab a manifold in a way that all you would have to do is flip a switch for that tube size and it would close a butterfly and in affect shorten or lengthen the tube and go. That would be the hard to design right there I am telling you.

Sounds like an incredible waste of time to me.
the 3.4 DOHC makes great torque as it is and performs very well in the upper RPM's. I'd enhance what's already there with larger runners straight from a correctly sized plenum to the heads.

I was thinking of that very thing. From what i under stand the 3.4 tdc makes it peck t at around 4500 and peck hp at 5000 to about 5500. That would make the intake runners about 16.5 to 17 inch long. That would keep the peaks right were there at now if i wanted to move them up the rpm range i would shorten the runners. I was also thinking a ram type runner would work good to. Oh by the way this is going in a 84 fiero. Was going with a sbc but cost and the 3.4 bolts right up to the m13 muncie 4 speed trans with a 4:10 final drive

well one thing you can do is the 96-97 intake manifold swap and when you do that you can swap over the fuel injection and obd2 computer also if im correct the 96-97 heads flow a little better and with some cnc pnp work flow rates will go up. comp cams has the spec for making cams for the 3.4 due to ppl ordering custom cams they just arent offered as a main item you need to email them about it. then finaly after that you can get into headers and exhaust. mms makes a set of headers for the 96-97 3.4L and overkill engineering motorsports sells exhaust for the w-body
