  • Northstar Throttlebody for 96-97 3.4DOHC?

This board seems more PERFORMANCE oriented than any other board so this will do better here probably.

I don't know if any of you have noticed but the L67 owners now have a new Throttlebody they can use, The New Northstar throttlebody.

The maker is WPI aka Das Regal GS and he is selling it through 3800performance.com Some others have made there own kits for themselves!

Well I just emailed the maker of the kit for them and asked if he could maybe make us some adapters for the Northstar Throttlebody for the 96-97 3.4DOHC owners. The stock size is 75mm and it would need to be adapted down to the stock plenum input size, whatever that may be. Don't own a 96-97!

I know we have the option of RSM and them boring out the stock TB, but the kit for the L67 with maf and all is not much more than RSM. We also have the Vegeta option. This may not be a mod for every 96-97 owner looking for a bigger TB, but it might be another option you have, and its always nice to have options when modding.

I would like his input though.

Now the questions that need to be answered.

Can this work with the 96-97's?
    Is 75mm too big?
The L67 kit uses the LS6 maf, what maf would we need?
The TB comes for a FWD, and everything I think we need. The adapter it there for the taper and to use the stock bolt location so you don't have to mod your stock plenum. Anything else we would need?

According to the Thread you can get those TB used on Ebay for like $50!

The NS kit doesn't have an exact price on it, but suppose to be close to the LS1 kit. The parts alone are $320 for them new that is TB and MAF. He will only be selling all new parts at first but might do some used parts later for cheaper.

stock maf should work perfect, as would a custom arm. 75mm is what I wanted to make the billet TBs since its just about the same as the opening to the plenum from the arm and the MAF is 3" from what I hear.

If its 50 bucks for a used MAF, I think ill get one sometime soon (when I have money to spare) and work on the flanges for it and the plenum using mandrel bent tubing. If anyone has a 96 TB and arm they dont need, let me know. If I can just make the arms then i could sell parts or the whole thing. I dunno how the stock throttle cables will do for hooking up, hopefully thats not a problem.

I found a 4.6L Northstar TB for $75 and a 4.9L Northstar TB for $80 on ebay. These both included all the sensors and the $80 even included the EGR plate and MAF!

I wander exactly which Northstar TB they use, and which one we would need?

When did GM make a 4.9 Northstar? Or is that really the 4.0 Aurora (smaller Northstar).

The 4.9 was what came before the northstar.....no DOHC on the
              old 4.9. Pushrod.

                Update

Just got a reply from the company that makes the L67 Northstar TB!

Here is the email I sent!
                I own a 95 GTP with a 3.4DOHC, but from 96-97 the 3.4DOHC was offered with a
Detachable TB just like the L67's. From 91-95 the TB was made with the
Plenum. Anyways I was wandering if it was possible for you to make adapter
plates for the 96-97 3.4DOHC if they asked using the NorthStar Throttlebody?

Our throttlebody stock size is 64mm if I am not mistaken and with some
running boost and some going insane with N/A mods on this engine a bigger
Throttlebody would really come in handy. We are limited to a 69.4mm
throttlebody bore right now since nobody makes a aftermarket throttlebody
                for us.

If you were interested I can get any info you want, and spread the word to
all the other 3.4DOHC owners. Also maybe setup something so a 96-97 owner
could meet up with you if you need be.

                Well thanks for listening!

                Here is the reply
Hello, sorry I didn't get back with you sooner. I could do something like
that if you want, a couple of things I would need would be an upper intake,
stock TB, and a local car to check out. And if there was enough interest I
could make something for you. The price would obviously depend on the
number of people interested, the more the better for you. Thanks,

                -Dave Winterhalter
