It should it helps to lesen foam and takes it a lil bit longer to heat soak from drag racing. But Dexron VI would be the best thing you could do for it. Or dish out the cash for the royal purple...
96 is vary tunable but only with the dhp tunner. No they are not the same pcm. If it was I could flash the 96 with a 97 bin but you cant the 96 is vary different.
96 Z34 3.4 SC DOHC Getrag, 284 5sd manual transmission, stage 3spec clutch, 97 engine, 97 pcm, S3 intercooler 1 of 1 Roots SC LQ1 in the world 8.5 psi.

Good to know info.. im actually on the rebuild going to the Dextron 6 fluid. didnt know about the overfilling trick but... Curious to know if the PCM connectors are the same from '96 to '97 and also if the pin-out would have to be changed if they are the same physical connector.. I have a '99 GTP ecu and a '98 LTZ ecu i guess i could look at them and see.
But from the looks of it i think im just going to rebuild the 60-E... id like a 65-e but honestly its my DD and it has lasted ~147,000 miles completely stock so i guess i aint making enough TQ to break it too bad lol... We will see once she is apart, unless its just TRASHED then i might consider the 65 swap.

if you really want those PCM pinouts and stuff, hit me up with a PM with all possible details and an e-mail address to send them to.
I switched my 96 Bonne, I believe there are about 7-10 wires that need to be relocated, and then you need to add the extra wires for the -65 if you intend to use it. I am a GM tech now, so I can get you connector views and pin charts.

Oh you're right about the PCM, I looked it up and they are different numbers. Here's what I show:
96 Z34 - 88963800
97 Z34 - 19109047
96 GTP - 16217058
96 Cutlass 3.1L and 3.4L - 88963800
97 Cutlass - 16217058
97 GP - 16217058
97 GTP - 19109047
98 Monte, 98 GTP - some completely different number than the 96-97's
I'm still confused though. Can/Do you put a 96 bin in a 97 PCM and then tune that? Seems to me like you'd have to have the right year and model software in the later PCM to make it run right. 97 GTP's have a very different engine and a 4T65-E and even the 97 Z34 has the 4T65-E (I just learned in this thread) so the software would be way different than a 96 GTP/Z34. Doesn't seem like it would work otherwise.
doubt it.. 1996 bin i think only works on the 96 pcm... someone can verify this... but i think its completely different pcm.
No, you need to use the proper bins for the proper ECM's. 96 is a 256k file, 97's are 512k so they will not work. Also you can use a 97 ECM to control a 60e. I'm doing it right now. All the shift controls are essentially the same since for the 60e all it will use are the shift tables, and tcc lockup tables, the rest is ignored such as the shift time and shift pressure, well not really ignored but since the wires are not connected it will not affect how the 60e shifts.

Good to know... maybe i will track down a '97 PCM or see if i have the correct PCM in hand i can flash with the '97 info and if this trans fails again put in a 65e...
