  • Mufflers

mufflers are shot on my 1991 3.4 cutty, went to a local shop here, and was quoted over 200 bucks just to change 2 mufflers.

i was told all the piping was in fine, just the mufflers had rusted thru.

looking for good performance with good sound, but not obnoxiously loud.

    any advice is appreciated

Im not sure what style of mufflers came on your car, but if you didnt want aftermarket ones, I have the stock mufflers/tips off my 97 monte z34 that are in good shape. Just some surface rust. They are the quad tip style with the two hangers on the end of each muffler. Just a thought. I dont know if they would even work for you tho. PM me if interested, if not then just ignore my post.

If you do want aftermarket, I bought a set of flowmaster knock-offs off of ebay for 25 bucks a piece. They may be a little more now, I think I saw them for 30 or 35 bucks last time I checked. They sound decent, they are 2 chambers just like flowmaster 40s.

Magnaflow, Borla are both good choices... Other people like flowmaster (personally not a fan, sound a little tinny and hollow to me on a V6)... honestly it all depends on what you want to spend... You can find magnaflow mufflers from under $100 each shipped then the muffler should would prob charge about $30ea to install.

There are cheaper alternatives out there, i will say if you spend a little money up front and get a nice stainless muffler, you should never have to replace it again... shouldnt rust out like stock (T304 stainless mufflers have like 1 million mile warranty.. from the manufactor)

Just curious....did the shop quote you on Maremont or Walker OEM replacement mufflers?.......if so I can understand why the large dollar figure involved seeing as both would carry a lifetime warranty on the product.

That does sound nice. I didn't hear any rasp like these cars are famous for (and makes me cringe).

maybe it's because my speakers aren't hooked up, or it's your camera, but it almost sounded ricey to me...

I've got "JBL Pro" computer speakers with a subwoofer hooked to my computer. We all know they don't sound that great since there aren't many computer speakers out there that rational people will pay for that sound good. Mine sound decent, but when I want to rock, I have my computer piped into my home theater since all of this is in my man cave. It get's pushed in through a digital coax line. It didn't sound rice to me through my stereo even, but I did hear a little rasp. It had a decent deep tone to it. I say decent because to me only a V8 can get a real nice deep tone.
