ok i was looking at my friends l67 and the coil pack setup seems the exact same would i be able to buy the same msd coils that he has and be able to hook them up to my ign mod?

that's because the 3x00 and 3800 motors use the same type of ignition: wasted spark.
the coils themself would fit perfectly, but wether they are any better than the stock coils is questionable. -
Yes, as Robert said they are the same and you can use them.
Besides them being Red, will get any benefit? probably not.
The stock coil packs are more than enough.As of April 2

I noticed a difference... when they jacked up my ICM and caused missfires all the time.
stock all the way.

One of the best thing GM ever made was the coil pack ignition. some are running crazy boost on the stock IgnitionMike 60degree addict.

If your factory coils are excellent, then I'd spend the money elsewhere, I only noticed a small difference with the coils,
on the other hand I really noticed the DIS-4 hooked up!
