O sweet. How much do you think it would cost to put a 284 tranny into my '95 cutty?

        eleven thousand dollars...

there have been a few conversions done out there, but i believe the easiest way about it was to swap the firewall plate with one that was already a 5 speed...

then you get to worry about tuning...
1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

What if I have a friend or my dad helping me put it in?

it's not incredibly expensive, just time consuming and you'll have some fab work to do.

Personally, I would use the Getrag 282 with a 3.94 final drive ratio behind the 3400 DOHC. These engines need as much gear as you can get to compensate for the poor bottom-end performance.

Mine never seemed to have much problem getting out of its own way. Now if you mean ~1500 rpm bottom end, yeah, but races don't happen at 1500 rpm. That and you have the beautiful thing of being able to launch at whatever rpm you want in a manual. I'm not busting chops or anything here, but most peoples opinions on the DOHC come from people that have never even driven one. Even when my 91 was an auto and Ben was tuning it he commented on how he doesn't see how people say it has no low end grunt, basically boiling down to exaggeration by people about the engines characteristics. Don't take this post as a gripe or flaming, I'm just discussing and putting in my opinion in an arena I've been in for a bit.
