  • gutted upper intake?

Hey everyone, I had one of those disturbing thoughts again..

I've been workin' on the turbofords for a while, and one of the things all the 2.3 guys (even the naturally aspirated guys) like to do all the time is gut the upper intake, and "kinfe edge" the lower intake for smoother airflow thru the plenum, in doing this you lose some torque due to the loss of the valve reverse pulses (when it closes) but the upper end almost always* goes up in power, has anyone thought about trying this, or something similar to this?

That's a mild version of this job this fiero guy did on his DOHC. For racing purposes it's an awesome way to get tons of top end power.

it actually looks like he's got the stock x-over pipe in there for those pic's...

that'd be a badass motor to drive, but yeah, something like that was what I was thinking, how do ya think that'd feel with everything else stock, if I could get a second upper intake, I'll rip it apart, if people are undecided, I'll actually try it, if it's totally not worth it, I won't waste my time.

I don't think it wouldn't be worth it. However, You will "probably" lose to tons of bottom end. So drivability will be throw out the window. Also if you don't have a 5 speed, or a modified automatic tranny, it will be hard to put it to the pavement.

I think I'll get a used one from the J-yard and try it out...

sweet! I'm gonna pick that guy up, and start gutting it out, but prior to putting it on, I'm gonna dyno my car for some Pre-swap number, and then some post-swap numbers...

I'm gonna try to do this on a loaded (mustang) dyno so I can get some accuracy with it.

Im assuming by "gut" you are removing all of the meterial between the runners?

I would be very interested in the dyno numbers

yup, that's exactly what I mean, so it's a totally hollow "can" so to speak. I'll post my results as soon as I've got 'em

Would that be good though? I mean... wouldn't the air distribution to each cylinder be affected?

well, that's why I'm gonna try it with a spare one, and see the changes, I don't want to trash the one I've got now, at least not without a spare on hand. I think the vacuum chamber idea of it and shorter runners may work pretty well, so I guess we'll see, now won't we..

You have tweaked my imagination. I'm curious too as to the numbers. Take pics if you can. If it works...Anyone consider mounting the TB on top? Kinda sideways? I mean if the plenum is empty..I know it means a hole in the hood, and a scoop. Cold air,FORCED> Hmmmmm. Kinda like an open high rise. Center the TB like a 4BBL Holley. Maybe losing bottom end is from side feed due to lack of instant air to all cylinders.

That could be true (the lack of air to all cylinders) the only problem with a center mounted TB would be re-routing the throttle cables and implementing the various sensors (IAT, TPS... can't think of any others at the moment) but I think a ram-air style intake setup like that would rock. And honestly punching a hole in the hood and sticking a scoop on it really isn't the hardest thing in the world to do.

You could also use two TB's, or one intake passage to each bank of cylinders... Two smaller passages would be better than one big one.

                          Oh man the udeas.

make sure u leave a few inches of runner at the bottom of the plenum for gasket surface and for the transition from the plenum to intake. knife edge the dividers orf the runners when your done.
