  • Rebuilding motor in 95 GTP, suggestions?

Recently I bought a 95 GTP with a blown motor due to timing belt failure. I plan on rebuilding it using parts from a 92 Z34 motor. While doing this though I kind of want to give it a little more power. Here are some things I've read about and I want to hear your suggestions...

I was thinking cam timing but what timing would get me more low end torque, but not sacrifice much high end? Any ideas would be great.

I was also thinking a CAI system to the fender but I don't really want to put the battery in the trunk so is there any other place to put it or any other way to get the CAI installed?

I don't have to pass emissions, so I'm definitely cutting the cat, but would blocking off the EGR valve help any?

Any other ideas feel free to add.

since the EGR turns off entirely when you got WOT, it won't affect full power, but it will help with the fuel economy if taken advantage of(when the EGR is running, you can add more Spark Advance without knocking). i don't know anything about DOHC motors so i can't help you with the rest of the stuff.

First I would just use a 96+ Lq1 engine and swap to OBD2. Contact bve32k he sells the lq1 obd2 harness and can set you up with a modified PCM. Then I would do the 6/6 timing mod. It's what's tried and true for timing so I wouldn't suggest anything else. I built bve32k's fender well cold air intake system, battery is still sitting in the stock location. Deleting the EGR would be only beneficial for easy future repairs/costs and cleans up the engine bay.

2.5" true mandrel exhaust is a nice mod too, it wakes the pain in the ass engine up quite a bit.

Those light weight lifters Ben sells are nice for the valve train, only down fall are slightly louder lifters... but nothing to be worried about at all.

I thought you don't want to change the timing on the 96'+ engines to the common 6/6 timing change???

Hrmm... I know there was an issue with the years, but I thought the older design was the years with the problem using 6/6. I do know it's still possible, but you have to know how much to only do. Which it might be something like 4/2 or something another. I'm sure it's in the archive somewhere.

I was also thinking of replacing the tranny fluid with type F and changing out the filter. I've been reading on shimming the accuators but could anyone elaborate on how this is done? Also my goal is only 250 horsepower (keep the tranny happy) as I got a Camaro as my true race car but I want this to be the fun daily driver. Will I be in reach of this goal as I'm pretty certain now I'm going to port and polish the heads and do an intake swap along with the FWI?
