  • would this work

i was thinking about making a ram air style intake and i wanted to know if it would work.

what i was thinking about is using the stock airbox, and doing this.

    step 1
90* elbow off of air box

    step 2
2+ foot of 3in aluminum pipe with heat wrap to keep air cool

    step 3
90* bend with intake opening here

so would this work or am i just totaly going in the wrong direction lol

It would probably work, but it wouldn't be ram air really, because it now has to make even more bends before it gets to the engine. The point of ram air is a direct shot into the engine to keep velocity of the air high and force (ram) it into the engine.

yeah and with the TB pointing to the driver side of the vehicle, good luck with that.

While it might be difficult to 'ram' the air into the engine using the stock air box, you can reduce the pressure drop across the intake so the engine doesn't have to work for the air it breathes. Here is an article that explains it well :

As the engine requires more air the effectiveness of the setup will be less noticeable. It should give a slightly better throttle response and help out with most normal street driving. Of course you aren't going to get tons of horsepower, and the results will vary depending on the setup. However it is a cheap modification that can yield positive results. Engines seem to respond best when mods are combined, such as adding a larger down pipe or free flowing muffler so the engine can inhale and exhale better. If one side has a bottleneck, opening the other side wont improve the breathing until the bottleneck has been addressed.

okay thanks for all the help. i had this osted on another site, and already got my answer last night. i decide i wil just wait till i have the money to relocate the battery, and get a cai/fwi.

when i came up with this i was just kind of going off my own design. that i based off of my moms gagt

              maybe?

i was thinking of the same thing, only utalizing the louvers on my z34 lumina.
i thought i might be able to make a half box permanent mount, and the other half attached to the hood(drivers side louvers)and then put those plastic hood scoops on top of the louver to create the RAM AIR effect.
i figured it would work except i havn't figured out a water drain system yet.
BUT I WILL,lol.and i also hate those frickin plastic scoops that you see on every frickin import, and truck.

has anyone ever done this to there z34 or gp?

I live in Hamilton Ontario, and drove by this place looking for a neat shop to have a look around.

It's a little house and there is no shop to speak of!

So they are buying stuff and re-selling it, which is fine, but there is no flow bench of any evidence.

I asked on-line for a quote on a part I am serious about, and everything came back in US Dollars and ridiculously expensive!

                        FWIW!

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, so I will mention it. Don't forget, if you move your intake pickup that low, your going to have to watch how you drive around deep water to avoid sucking a buttload in and hydro locking your engine. At least yours will be up higher then others I have seen, which is a good thing.

I have an intake about the same spot on my Beretta, at least I will have, however I only plan to make it functional at the track and disconnect most of it and return to a simple WAI for any street driving I do.

I'm not sure what your intention is with the car, but that might be athought.

Since the middle of the hood is a LOW pressure area, using the Z34 grilles will be an exceptionally poor way to build a ram-air system unless you have a tall enough scoop to be above the low-pressure part. Otherwise, natural air flow will try to vacuum air OUT of your intake system.

In general, RAM air is pretty pointless on a street-driven vehicle; you aren't going fast enough to generate any real ram effect.

COLD air induction can be quite an improvement over pulling air in from the heated engine compartment--but--since the W body already has a cold-air inlet for the air box, you haven't gained anything.
