  • easiest DOHC mods-best bang for buck ?

I've just bought an '01 Monte SS as my "grown up" car- my old 1995 GTP w/DOHC 3.4 can now be relegated to 2nd line/hot rodding/thrash duty

the car is bone stock except for pulled EGR valve and all cams advanced 1 degree on the balancer mark, which really woke that thing up

question- what's the easiest bolt-on/tuning mods to get more power from an old DOHC ? I don't want/need colored wires or chrome intake pipes unless they actually ADD power. I also don't want reprogrammed fuel/timing maps that cause a rich condition or hard starting, or rough idle/stalling.

1st on the list of course if pull the converter- but what else actually works ?

would bolting a 1996 DOHC heads-cam-intakes-headers make any more power, and/or is it worth it ? Factory rating only added 5-10 HP over the 1995 setup.

I don't want/use power adders such as turbo, blower, NOS

my goal would be to get the car to run a 13.99 e.t. 1/4 mile w/street trim on 93 octane pump gas

would it require an aftermarket computer, prom, injectors ?

OBD2 swap could open up doors for tuning, 96-97 intakes, underdrive pulley (if you can still find them), 2.5" exhaust (I prefer 3 mufflers to keep the noise down), a cold air intake with a filter in the fender is helpful (if it's in the engine bay it's louder, but not more powerful). You may also want to consider milling the heads slightly or another way to increase compression ratio.

i don't remember correctly but '96 heads, '95 cams and '96 intakes are the best combo iirc. the 95 cams are more agressive and the '96 heads/intakes flow better from what i remember hearing... Correct me if im wrong.

Or custom turbo kit with low boost... ~5psi

It actually starts kicking in at 3500 rpm. It's pretty fun. A lot of the parts on it are the same ones from the first setup that Shane (RedZMonte) helped put together.

When are you going for 10 psi Shane?

I have a 10psi spring in the wastegate.... but after 2 miles of pipes and a intercooler im seeing 7psi. its allready faster then the sti from a roll on so im pretty content as is for now.. but im thinking of maybe cranking her up a little and maybe shortening my piping a little..
