  • coil relocation ...

hey, just wondering where the best place to put the coils are in the relocation on a 92 Z34, pictures of locations would be cool - ...

    Thanks

    Why are you relocating them?

I considered it when doing my headers to make way for Cyl. 2's primary, but it ended up clearing fine. Maybe for shorter wires? I doubt you'd see much gain. Or an aftermarket ignition? I know John, KickinZ, relocated his ignition to underneath the throttle body, but that was becuz he was usign a MSD ignition, of which he never got to work right.

I want to relocate mine too. I want to move the computer some, and put the coils partially where the computer sits, and use a 94 style coolant overflow tank. I have the tank already, but I nee the time and motivation to get out there and do it. Reason I want to do it? I HATE where the stock coils are, and I bet it gets pretty hot there under the exhaust manifold, even with that heat sheild. Also later I want to make some headers for the beast.

i put my battery in the trunk and the coils on the battery tray. with the way gm's fry ignition modules i figured it would be best if they were out in the open, plus it definitely cant hurt that they are out from the heat of the exhaust manifold

Did you have problems with rerouting the wires? I've heard that you don't want to mess around with the wire routing. Because of possible detonation caused by inducted current.

I have the header, it runs about 1.5" above the ignition, and that is about as low as any of them go. And there are no heat shields. It runs fine, but some cooling efforts couldn't hurt.

well, I ended up with one of my plug wires layin' on the exhaust manifold, and I just want to prevent that in the future, that's the main reason I want to relocate them - I was thinking of putting them behind the coolant tank and moving the computer too, but man that's a lot of wires I'd have to move 'round, so the battery tray is sounding like a good idea for now.

              Thanks for the input guys.

i had to make the wires longer so i made a new dedicated harness just for the module wiring. moving them to the passenger side would involve pulling the wires out of the bundle and not extending them so that might be best choice. i did mine while the drivetrain was out of the car.

on the 96+ 3.4 tdc the coil packs are located on the rear passenger side on the plenum. i have the bracket that the coil pack hooks to. although i don't know if it will work on a pre 96 application because of the differences in the intake length.
on the pre 96 intakes there 2 bolts that hold 2 vacuum connections on the left rear of the intake, just remove the bolts(not the assembly), line the bracket up and put the bolts back in. some or no modification may be required i am not sure.
but u are welcome to the bracket if u want it. just pay shipping and 2 bucks for gas.

p.s. if it does work u will need 96 plug wires. the pre 96's will work, but will be way too long.

i have it behind the coolant box. they just sit there. wasnt that bad, and i have noticed no new problems. only thing, watch the white tach wires. do one wire at a time.

i will try to get pics tonight.

thanks everyone for the ideas, I wanted to put mine behind the coolant box so I'm looking forward to those pic's, but with all these ideas, I don't know exactly what i want to do.
