  • Turnin' to 60V6 for help with 3.6 LY7 head flow

Ok, I do not own a G6, CTS, Outlook, Aura, or any other vehicle that uses the LY7 heads. However, after my Passat lease is up, I'm going for an 05 6MT 3.6 CTS... early this spring.

Ok, the quest is to purchase a bare head, and a set of valves, and flow bench them. Then to port them on my own time and dollar, to see what kind of flow we can get out of them, have them reflowed.

I am asking for donations to Paypal for anyone that would be interested in these numbers. I'm well known on other forums and have been around these forums reading up for well over a year, I also use my first name as my screen name. I'm going to a bunch of different forums for the dontation request. I'm not doing this for profit, I'm going to be spending my time porting and driving and negotiating, so we can figure out some hard evidence for head flow numbers.

    Cost for bare head: $384.94
    Cost for 2 intake/2exhaust valves: ?
    Plus shipping costs
    Plus material cost for porting
    Plus flow bench costs.

So, if I get enough by way of donations, then I'll perform the work. If not, I'll just return the funds. You can PM me or look up my email address if you want to make a donation, I don't know the forum policy on posting something like this, so I don't want to outright post my email address in the forum. Question are welcome. If you have any donations other than funds, like a head, or some used valves that would be very helpful as well.

Ill post the numbers on this site for free once I am done with the pushrods, and have the DOHC head and intakes for R&D. Please let us know what you come up, and how the bench was setup when testing the head (for comparison).

Did you check car-part for a used head? Sometimes you can get stuff cheap when there isnt a big demand for a motor yet.

Read over the GM powertrain site before you buy, at least one of the 3.6 engines (not sure if it's the direct injected version only or not in the CTS) has extrude honed ports, I just can't remember for the life of me if I read it or saw it on a special or not but I remember it discussing the power gains from it and being surprised that GM would actually go to that extent.

I actually made a note today to contact this company regarding a potential stand alone camshaft phaser that they apparently have in production for possible crossover to the 3900. To get the most out of these engines you have to take advantage of the extra power under the curve available with VVT:

High performance premium cylinder heads and components for LS & LT applications. We design and manufacture a large line of cylinder heads for LS1, LS3, LS7, LS9, LT1, LT2 & LT4 engine platforms. If you are looking for more power and better performance from you LS or LT engine, look no further.

Found the info, it's actually the 4.4 SC cadillac motor that has extrude honed exhaust ports. I didn't have the similar engine specific GM document to know for sure whether they used this upgrade on the high end 3.6L.

Thanks for the help guys. I've had a couple of expensive repairs on my Supra come up recently, so I don't have the extra money to spend on the head right now, however I do have somone that would be willing to flowbench it for us!

                  Edit:
The "trucks/cross overs" whatever you want to call them had the upgraded heads, they revised the intake and exhaust ports, I'd LOVE to flow both of them to see what the difference would be, perhaps down the road, but right now I'd start with the standard ole 252-255 horse 3.6

Hey guys, I just wanted to update. I called that link, good find btw. It'll cost me about $200 with shipping as the price says. Do we have any dontations?
It would be much appreciated, I'm still trying to work on repairing my supras intake manifold and thats gonna be another $250... So if we have any paypal dontations that would be greatly appreciated.

What I'm going to do is take the bare head and have it shipped to my friend who will flow bench it stock, I'll post up the numbers for I&E with a clay radius, then I need to pay to have it shipped back to me, to have it street ported as best as I can without mucking up the port shape, ship it back to him for the re-flow. Then I could sell it to somone who would want me to port the Right side head as well. That sale would ONLY serve to recoupe my materials and shipping. (So anyone that was looking for a VERY Budget set of street + heads with confirmed flow bench numbers would may want to go ahead and donate the purchase of the head. Just a suggestion.

I'm only doing this for data, so people know about this amazing motor. I'm going to be using a Pro Standard Abrasives kit with a air powered rotary Die grinder, other matierals will include Dykum, WD 40 for lubrication, cleaning agents, and I'll have to pay to have it hot tanked. Additionally, I'd have the head milled as little as possible just to true the deck if somone would be willing to purchase it, this is one motor I DON'T want to increase compression on incase anyone wants to use it for some boosties!

I dunno, I think the LY7 would be a fantasic motor even NA, with some headwork and a more agressive cam. Typically GM goes for high port velocity, low cam profiles.
