  • Motor Swap success!

Well i finished switching the motors from my 91 GTP 5 speed to my brothers 91 GTP Automatic and it works perfect! actually better than perfect, the swap was a little bit time consuming, but very easy! not once did i have to use the book or anything to help me. you can feel the 13* cam timing retard in the automatic where you couldnt feel it in the 5 speed but once you hit 4000 rpm now it feels like a turbo is kicking in! the car from a dead stop will fry the tires if you hammer it which it would never do before and weve owned the car since it was almost brand new! getting to 120kmph is no problem now at all and even pushing it to 140 is quick. although my 5speed would get to 175 by the time this thing gets to 140. so i am very impressed! no oil leak or any leak at all! plus its getting great gas mileage! my brother is very happy with his new found power! well now we have to rebuild his engine (performance) and put it back in his car. oh and it was his oil pump that blew out of his!the only thing i had to swap on the motors was the motor mounts, auto tranny vaccume line, the exhaust manifolds, and the flywheel. any ways gotta go to work now.

You might want to check your exhaust system on your car (the 5 speed). It might be plugged. I know in my 91 (has the cam timing done too), you couldn't feel it too good. Then I put a better, unplugged, used exhaust system on the car, and it pulled alot better. Now, the cat on that system has gone down the tubes too, and it doesn't have the pull it used to.

oh that was a typo. i meant to say you cant feel the power loss on the low end in the 5 speed, whereas you can feel it in the auto. you can definatly feel a power increase in my 5 speed but in the auto you only feel it at 4k rpm. sorry about that.

You guys might want to consider the cam timing Ben and I came up with that helps out the auto's. It had better low end, but the high end started to fall off a little right before shifting (makes for a much happier tranny, the 13* retard will piss it off). The 3 biggest killers of auto trannies is heat, hard takeoffs, and high rpm shift. The first and last ones being the biggest problem with the 4t60e. Ben might remember better then me on what we set them to, but I think the intake was advanced 8 and the exhaust might have been 6, but I'm probably wrong since it has been a it is coming up on 2 years that the 5 speed has been in the car.

Jake: should I ask what happened to the 5 spd car? ie why did you swap from one to the other? Or is that a sad story.......

its a very sad story. i still have it but its really screwed up. i should post some pics from the crash. lets put it this way. i went into a ditch and a cement culvert hit my passenger side front tire and went right through the rim and blew the whole strut assembly into the frame of the car and bent the frame. the passenger side door wont open anymore because the frame wedged it shut. the roof is buckled and my subframe is bent and i need a whole new front suspension. i will post some pics later. but if you wan to see some pics of it 2 weeks before the crash go to my www link. but good things came out of this crash, i am rebuilding and supercharging my car, i get to modify my front air dam to look like a saleen mustang ( i will post pics when im done with that) and i get to replace the passenger side front tire which is a good thing because it was patched before! see good things come out of everything. oh and i just got a quote from the body shop at the dealership i work at and they said they will straighten the frame and fix the door so it is ligned up and opens and take the buckle out of the rof for $900 canadian! not bad, nice discount i get though.

ah geez; that stuff is no fun....... I wondered why you were taking the engine out of 284 car and putting it into an auto car. I would have thought going the OTHER way would be more tempting.
Did you ruin the drivetrain/engine etc or what all do they have to do there?
it SOUNDS like it must be close to a write off.....???

no, engine and drivetrain are perfect, the engine didnt even stall when i crashed. im not sure on what they are gonna have to do, but it would be a write off if insurance would have covered it. but they wouldnt have so i didnt claim it, which means i have to pay for everything out of my own pocket!
