I do notice shuddering at like 100 mph at 4 grand. Umm, I am using a k and n air filter and the turbo is brand new, 1500 miles. Its a garrett, not china crap, no shaft play. I do notcie a wierd sound when I get off the gas at low rpm

Properly adjusted? Yeah I have a wastegate. Also I do have a BOV

Is there contact when you spin it by hand?

You may have just got a spec of dirt or something in there. It doesn't look like it has been continuously rubbing.. but if you are getting a shudder it may be out of balance and getting whacky at high compressor speeds.

That circumferential scratch around the housing, in line with the impeller looks like machining marks from the manufacturing process.
If you can not push the impeller side to side by hand and make it touch the housing, and the shaft has little or no in and out play, nothing to worry about.
Can you describe this sound it's making? Is it a deep blowing noise or a soft, pulsating "who who who" right as you ease off the gas? Most turbos make some sort of blowack or surge noise when the throttle is closed from mild acceleration. There is not enough boost or vacuum to actuate the BOV and the slightly compressed air trapped in the intercooler and intake pipework blows back through the compressor making this sound. This is normal and harmless.
Is this your first turbo engine, or is this a replacement turbo that sounds different than the original?
I replaced a Rajay with a Turbonetics ball bearing unit last year and the sound of the engine changed dramatically. They are similar sized turbos but the Turbonetics compressor is definately louder.
What sort of "shudder" are you experiencing? Is it like a fluctuating boost pressure causing the engine torque to pulsate, can you see it on a boost gauge?David Allen - Northport, AL

The shudder, I am almost positive is the injectors giving out. They are leaking real bad. The noise that I hear under very little acceleration is more or a small blowing noise with a hint of a high pitch scratching noise. The turbo is brand new garrett, and yes this is my first turbo car. The shaft has no play side to side and none in and out. No I can no see it on the boost gauge, basically its when I hit 4th gear at about 80 the car has no pull and it shudders if I try to pass someone on the highway. I have to do my injector swap along with the OBD II harness that I just recieved.

you added a turbo...did you upgrade the tranny too, or at least add more line pressure. shudder seems like clutches slipping too me. i had a stick shift that did that if i slipped the clutch. was really bad in reverse. 80 mph might be around your torque peak and the clutches just can't hold anymore. look at the tranny fluid on the dipsitck. if it's dark and smells really bad, that could mean the clutches are burnt. food for thought.Andy
