If your shop has a machine, shot peen the block when you're done removing all the casting flash and smoothing out oil drainback passages, before you have it bored and honed. My machinist shot peened my block and it turned out very nice. All of the rough casting finish is smoothed down and there are no longer any sharp edges anywhere.
Be wary of knife edging the crank. You can possibly remove too much material, to the point that it can't be balanced. Consult your machine shop.

The shot peening process for the block would be different than the rods; it doesn't necessarily need to be done with the same amount of force and consistency on the block as the rods. My shop had their own shot peening machine for cleaning iron blocks and stuff. I think it was more along the lines of a shot blaster but it did take down rough peaks on the casting and whatnot.
