when i replaced my starter, all-data said i had to remove all sorts of stuff and i only had to remove the oil filter and flywheel cover.

i heard you dont need a shim for the newer style, so i didnt put the old one in and its working great. i did have a little trouble w/ the one i got (wouldnt turn over), but i got it replaced and no problems since.

I only had to remove the oil filter and one bolt on the dogbone and have my buddy rock the motor one way, can't remember if we had pull it or push it but it take much. That was only to remove the huge ass stock starter I didn't need to rock the when I put the mini starter on. As for shiming the starter just put and if it works rights and the gear noise is not excesive don't worry, I just threw mine on and it worked fine

In late 02 gm redesigned the starter again for the 3400. a 2.2L pushrod motor also uses this new starter. casting number on the even smaller lat 02 starter is 9000901

These mini starters on the late 90s cars are awesome. They're 7 lbs versus the stock DOHC starter's 13.4 lbs!! They're easier to install, sound cooler, and give more room for working on things like the coil packs (if in the stock location) and the oil filter / oil cooler.
It's a very good upgrade or replacement, especially if you can find them in the junkyard for $20 like I did.

I'm interested in checking out the '02+ starters, I'll have to keep an eye out for them at the junkyard. Any idea how much they weigh?

So this has been dead for a while but has anyone tried an 02+ 60DEG V6 starter yet?

I put the 3400 starter on my 3100 and loved it. I was a little worried about it being able to turn a LQ1 since it has more valves to push down. The LQ1 is simply takes more force to turn. But it starts up fine with the 3400 starter.

Heres a video, starts right up with the 3400 starter.

And Im pretty sure all 60* motors 97+ use the smaller starter.
