I just finished putting my engine back together. I used the stock dampner and put a little goop around the key. Well for some reason it is leaking out a lot of oil. It is doing this on all 3 engines that we have rebuilt. So I ordered a brand new AC delco dampner, $180 they are not cheap. But it seems like it does not like to be used multiple times, or maybe I am doing something wrong, but it leaks quite a bit of oil. We did check the oil pan gasket and the timing cover seal and both are ok. So just make sure that you dont fuck around with it to much.

You have to change the seal on the timing cover and you use rtv on crank to seal the inside of the damper. Iv never had a leak and have had myn off 3 times.
96 Z34 3.4 SC DOHC Getrag, 284 5sd manual transmission, stage 3spec clutch, 97 engine, 97 pcm, S3 intercooler 1 of 1 Roots SC LQ1 in the world 8.5 psi.

As there apparently are no upgrades for our dampers, I've been looking at getting mine rebuilt. I think I'm going with http://members.aol.com/damperdoc/ . My damper is off a crate motor that's never been started, but it looks like it was used as a weight for a lobster pot. This outfit does black powder coating while it's apart. He'll do any color if you supply the powder. $80.00 with the powder coating or $65.00 without.Last edited by sspeedstreet; 10-19-2007, 12:42 PM.

humm, reall RTV on the crank itself. What about on the crank KEY. I did replace the timing cover seal, infact I did every gasket becasue I rebuilt the whole motor. But this thing pumps out oil

Hmmm, I have never had to RTV my crank. Considering you have to bake the damper just to get it to slide on at all, it seems like that should be tight enough. I have never had an oil from that are, and I have always used a new seal in the timing cover.I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

I'm so happy someone is talking about this. I've replaced my seal, damper and oil pan gasket and I still get seepage out the front... the only thing I can think of doing is sleeving the damper and rtving the around the crank snout....never had to deal with this before....Lorenzo

Yeah its not cracked. I replaced the balancer at $200 thinking that was the problem, still leaking. I did put RTV on the balancer, still leaking. Do i need to have a sleeve machine for the outside of the pully. I mean WTF, this is stupid. i have had the balancer off like 4 times now.

i never had to bake mine, i just tightened that large crank bolt with the washer on it and the damper usually slides on np.
it is hard as hell to get it off though, it usually fights that puller all the way.
only damper option i know of is downgrade to the 91-93 obd1(which i had to do for a 5 spd swap) and use the 91-93 damper since it is a little lighter. not alot of market as this would only be applicable to peeps that done a 5 spd swap on a 94+ 1st gen, peeps that put newer engines into older cars, or peeps that downgraded to obd1 for whatever reason.The Official Rotating Mass Nazi
