  • Pistons and rings

Hi, I when i rebuild my 3.4 what pistons and rings should i use? i checked out beck racing, but i want you guys opinon. i want somthing equal to stock or better. and what about these total seal rings are they any good? also how much do these items cost? i would just buy oem pistons but they want $250 and with my discount $200 each so i really dont want to do that, plus each ring is $30. any input would be great. thanks.

Jake I work with a guy that pulls 8s w/ a 68 TA. he uses total seal. I have not used them yet. But they are on my list.

A neighbor of mine ran total seals for a season, and switched to regular rings during the winter when he was freshening up the engine. The engine was dynoed in the same configuration, just different rings and there was no detectable difference. Even after a seasons worth of racing on the standard rings there was no measurable loss in HP. This engine is running close to 1600 peak HP on N2O. After seeing his results I don't feel they are worth the money.

Total seal rings are nice, in that they are really easy to install and kinda tough to mess up. They really do not offer anything in terms of performance, and in fact if you look at recent articles you will see that alot of people are claiming a better seal with regular rings, than with Total Seal.

I think, if you think about it, they have to give you a better seal. But I heard that they just illiminate the chance of your ring gaps aligning and that praticular cylinder temporarily loosing compression. Over all, the preformance gains would be negligable. Use them if you want to, but if you don't, nobody will think less of you.

I read an article in a magazine where they compaired total seals and aftermarket "gapless rings". The total seals gave better resistance to blow by and had less leakdown. If I run across the magazine (since I don't throw them away when they have good info) I will scan the writeup and post it. Oh, they also got more compression (using the different rings on the same exact pistons), and did get more power on an engine dyno.

I am using Total Seal rings-installed them with my rebuild.

Damn them boys were not cheap!
