  • True 3.4 Power

so from reading about this engine it was suposed to make decently big numbers when GM first built it but they had to brign the power down due to tranny issues. My question is would it be possible to bring the original power back to this engine and match a stronger tranny to it that could handle the power?

anything is possible... but the original power is what we got... the story you heard/ read is kinda like an urban legend that floats around this motor. and if it did exist it was a pure prototype and would never have seen production in that configuration anyway.

with my current boltons im in the area of 250-260 hp.... and i still have room for more if i do the exhaust manifolds and timing changes.

the best engine trany combo is the 97 Z34. but doing a good performance build on these will deff help.

GM DID make a 250 hp LQ1 in 1995. I've got a Chevy High Performance magazine from 1995 around here somewhere that goes over a Monte Carlo used as a pace car. Doesn't say anything about a limited production run or anything like that, so it could very well be a one off.
I gotta tidy up my office this weekend, if I find it I will scan the article and post it up.

Why would GM design a motor for a w-body at that time that would outrun their Camaros? Then they would of had to up the camaro and then the Corvette would be lacking.
I saw the post you made on w-body... that guy on car domain took all that info from a website, I've seen the site and its the identical wording and everything (had the site book marked but lost it in my last reformat)
If they were able to get 281hp out of the LQ1 back then, don't you think the newer 3.5L DOHC and the 3.6L DOHC would have more hp? The 3.6L DOHC available in the G6 GTP has 256hp (just a hair under the L67), but if they could would they not up the HP to blow the competition out of the water?

In all fairness they probably restrict all their engines to meet a certain point in their line up. Meaning they don't want an old man in his Grand Prix to be able to outrun Mr. Midlife Crisis in his sports car. But all this talk about 270 or 280 hp originally in the LQ1 is purely speculation, GM will NEVER come forward and confirm it, and they will especially never come forward and tell us all how they detuned it, so thats a whole new thread of speculation.

we all know that GM sometimes under-rates their engines, how hard do you think it is for them to over-rate as well?

pain sweat and tears most likely! IIRC its is just a chopped up stock manifold... with a lot of TLC.
